..It was a private hire car, hired directly from the owner who had given me his card previously. I phoned him directly because we needed a 7-seater, and I knew he had one; It normally costs in the region of £10 to taxi from my house to the city centre. I didn't ask for a price up front because it is such a routine journey; and we had to divert slightly to pick up one more passenger on the way. ...

Not sure if this is the correct forum. Apologies if it isn't. We own the lease of a ground floor apartment in a block. The block was constructed about 4 years ago. Recently a severe water leak developed in the apartment 3 floors above with the result that all the apartments between us and the leak have been damaged to a greater or lesser degree. The management company arranges the buildings...

Now that he has been convicted and sentenced Sky news are running a lengthy piece on the case in which they feature incriminating e-mails and voice mails between the canoe man and wife, which they say are "exclusive" to sky news. Presumably these would have been "uncovered" legally?

Hi I was caught doing 48 in a 40 in Lincolnshire at the weekend. This was by a truvelo hidden round a corner just after the limit dropped from 60 to 40. Money grabbing *******s! I was not driving my own car (weekend break so shared the driving). The RK has received the NIP today and it offers the choice of a speed awareness course. Does anybody know if this course will be offered to me when...

I'm waiting for the first person to answer my "thain v anniesland" thread with the "Do you expect us to do your homework for you?" typical usenet response. The truth is I can't afford to do a law degree, but I think it's something I'd like to do. I am 40 years old and I can't see any point, would I be employable at age 44 assuming full time and age 46 - 47 assuming part time? I also would be...

I have read through numerous pub car park ticket threads on the forums, however I have a slightly more unusual case here that I was interested in people's opinions on. Basically my girlfriend had an agreement with a previous pub manager that she could park her car in the pub car park for a small fee every week, which she paid to the bar on a Sunday night for which she received a hand written...

Our local Post Office has a small 'Dogs Not Allowed' sign on it's front door. I can understand this where food & drink is for sale, or is being consumed - Health & Safety rules, etc. But this is just a Post Office with a tiled floor.. Is this just a jobsworth flaunting his power, or is there a valid law in operation here?

Good afternoon, I have a very specific question about the tenancy deposit scheme and the Housing act which gouverns it. We have had an offer accepted on a house. It is listed as 3 bedroom with a rear extension. In doing the searchs, our solicitor has discovered that the extension and loft conversion (the 3rd bedroom) which were supposedly built in 1998 have not gotten either planning permission or building regs (these were 'pending'). We are not concerned with the planning permission. My questions is (which...

Well not me, but my husband. His job is cleaning a pub (not self-employed), which belonged until yesterday to a brewery, who employed him. He has worked there for 6 months. Hi. I have just discovered a water mains stop-cock under a small square lid in my garden (ex-council). I have asked them to move it, but they said they cannot/won't unless I agree to pay for a new supply pipe. I think that's a bit of liberty, as they currently have their property trespassing on mine. A year ago I successfully asked the local authority to remove a "trespassing" lampost at...

We all know that ignorance of the law is no defence. So it would seem reasonable that people should have, at least, a passing familiarity with it. Given that this country's been passing laws for 900+ years does anyone have a view on how long it would take to actually read them all? As an easier option, how far back to most of the laws that people generally get into trouble with, go? I'd guess...

I was made redundant from a part-time cleaning job, at the end of June. The amount of redundancy pay was all agreed and also payment of 12 weeks wages in lieu of notice (amounting to approx £1650), everything was confirmed in writing. The "Train Fare" saga has made me wonder about something that happened to me this week. Would anyone be able to suggest any answer to this? The situation is being charged under the act mentioned above with making an offensive gesture to a passing motorist, with an 80 pound fixed penalty on the way. If one were to refuse to pay the penalty and the CPS were to decide it worth prosecuting, what sort of penalties are usually meted out for this "offence"?

Finally the British police with their Stasi-like tendencies to monitor all of us have had their collars felt, their wings clipped.
