I certainly can't understand how pro tennis players can play when pro boxers
etc can't.

Olympic amateurism regulations were eventually abandoned in the 1990s with
the exception of boxing, where the rules remain amateur rather than
professional for the safety of the participants.

I confess that I am not old enough to remember, but was there really a
professional ToW circuit in 1928?
