A man caught on CCTV stealing a Poppy Appeal tin from a shop counter on
Remembrance Sunday has been jailed for a year. Adrian Holmes, 29, from Giles Road in Oxford, snatched the money from Rowes Newsmarket in Wallingford Street in Wantage, Oxfordshire. The thief, a heroin addict, was branded "the lowest of the low" by the mayor. Magistrate Richard Jones told Holmes he could not see any alternative to a custodial sentence. 'Felt gutted' It is thought the collection tin contained about £70. Stock controller Debbie Stoter, who was working in the shop at the time, said it was a "brazen" theft and the defendant "obviously didn't care". Holmes also took another tin from the nearby Charlton Park Garden Centre on the same day. Mayor of Wantage Patrick O'Leary said: "I felt gutted when I heard about this. "It can only be the lowest of the low for somebody to do that." Story from BBC NEWS: http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/pr/fr/-/1/h...re/7752676.stm Published: 2008/11/27 20:49:35 GMT © BBC MMVIII |
