Last Thursday the www.roguecustomer.com website was officially launched by
MP Tim Loughton at Westminster, London. Nigel Gray and his Team have done a terrific job in putting the website together and it is hoped that new legislation might be proposed and adopted which will curb the actions of criminals who wilfully and deliberately seek to defraud honest working men/women through non payment for goods and services. Does anyone on uk legal have any suggestions for changes to the existing laws which might legally prevent crooked customers from defrauding goods and service providers? Does anyone on uk legal have any suggestions for changes to the existing laws which might legally prevent crooked customers from defrauding goods and service providers? Colin Peters http://colinpetersbd40jh.tripod.com Until we treat everyone the same, we will have favoured rogues. Here in the UK, we have favoured categories of people who can virtually "do no wrong" and get away with all sorts of sharp practice. 1. Cyclists. If a cyclist is involved in any sort of accident, the system treats him as a victim against the "nasty" motorist or the "careless" pedestrian. Cyclists get away with running red lights, riding on the footpath, using pedestrian crossings as though they were pedestrians etc., etc. They even have special spaces at road junctions to let them get ahead of the cars. 2. Kids. How often have you heard of kids, some as old as 17, harrassing members of the public yet nothing ever happens to them. Under 10 and they cannot be prosecuted for anything including murder or rape. We cannot even identify the daughter-rapist of Sheffield lest it upset the holy child. 3. The police. How often do you hear of individual officers being held accountable for the atrocities they commit while on duty. When was a policeman charged with, let alone convicted of, murder or manslaughter after he shot and killed an innocent person "by mistake"? The death penalty was abolished, Pierrpoint lost his job but the police have taken his place and the death penalty restored without the benefit of a court trial. 4. The Post Office under its various guises. Any lawyer will tell you that it is pointless sueing the Post Office, Royal Mail, Parcelforce etc as they are bound to win, no matter what. "The bearers of the Queen's Mail can do no wrong". 5. Consumers. There are masses of consumer protection statutes in force that the trader has virtually no rights left. This makes it easy for rogue customers to get away with their rougery. Most of these laws were introduced because the favoured few were seen as vulnerable at some point in history. Times have changed but the laws remain. -- Alasdair. |

Motorist ignore the green marked cycle lanes and blatantly ignore a 30mph limit where I live. Speeds are more like 50-60 there, making it very hazardous for cyclists. Many cyclist are also motorists when they don't cycle, so it isn't always 'them and us'... |

Colin Peters http://colinpetersbd40jh.tripod.com I take it the site will operate within the 'spririt of the' Data Protection Act and give those accused a right to reply? I welcome and will publish any reply from anyone featured. |
