Bailiff Powers by Worried Mum
Hi Hope someone can give me some advice. Our 19 year old son who lives with us had a £120.00 fine, which unknow to us, he never paid. Last Friday a bailiff came to the house and gave me a letter for him. This was the first I knew about the matter. The amount owing is now £272.00. It also turns out that he owes over £300 to a mobile phone company. He isn't working at the moment and claims...

Social workers....! by Mike Ross
Sometimes I think social workers get given a hard time they don't deserve... then something like this comes up. What were they smoking?! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/4670984.stm "A sheriff has said it "beggars belief" that a social worker recommended probation for an armed robber who attacked two women in Aberdeen. Charles Dukes, 29, admitted being armed with a fishing knife when...

Advice: pavement cycling/child by Danny Colyer
R. Murphy wrote: Isn't there a definition of pavement (children's) cycles into which Moultons, bromptons and the like neatly fit? I've been hearing this rumour all my life, but no-one's ever been able to point me to any actual legislation. I notice that someone (Tom?) has now crossposted this thread to uk.legal, if anyone there knows of such legislation I'd be interested. --

public showing of DVD by herbert
Hi all, There's lot's of information on the web how it's forbidden to show one's DVDs in public, but what I can't find is how to make it legal. I want to show a short (3 minutes or so) clip from a popular movie during a presentation (about technology that can be used for displaying movies, among other things). Who do I have to ask for permission? Is there a general copyright

From BBC news website 1 February 2006 A police constable who reached 159mph on a motorway has had his acquittal for speeding and dangerous driving overturned by the High Court. Pc Mark Milton, 38, from Telford, Shropshire, was recorded by the patrol car's video camera on the M54 in 2003.

Purchase of Repossessed House by FerretFace
We're in the process of purchasing a repossessed house. We recently had the survey completed - and then were subsequently told by the agent that they'd received a higher offer which is still being considered. I'm being told by the estate agent that the house cannot be taken off the market until exchange, is that true? They say that legally the third party they are dealing with has an...

Ex-employers paid me money - possibly accidentally? Whats the deal? by paulfoel
Three months ago I parted company with my employer fairly accrimoniously. Ended up getting blamed for something someone else had done. To cut a long story short, I accepted a compromise settlement of three months pay, with me agreeing to leave quietly. So I left, and luckily found a new job fairly quickly. There was a fair bit of hassle chasing down the money but I evenually got all I was owed...

Prosecutor in discussion with Defence witness pre-trial. by Peter Burrage
I posted late last night regarding a summons I have received with relation to having a vehicle on the road without a vehicle license. I had a pre-trial review in court in November and said I would be relying on a letter from someone in the DVLA which stated, at the time of the alleged defence, I was not the Registered Keeper. When asked if I wished to call any defence witnesses, I said providing...

Can I sue ? by PaulH
My girlfriend is separated from her ex, and they have 2 young children, 11 and 9. Her ex promised to pay for one of his daughters school trip and even paid the deposit and promised to pay the balance when due. When this became due he refused to pay the balance. I felt compelled to act to ensure her inclusion on her trip, so I paid the balance. The father is still refusing to re-imburse me...

New private letting laws - April by Falz
Ok, our new landlord has told us that from April there will be new laws coming in which require anyone renting out a property to be registered, and properties to be up to a certain standard etc. He also says that as of April, if a landlord is renting a property to tenants who harrass neighbours, cause noise etc. then that landlord will legally obliged to evict the tenant. I really hope this is...

Faulty goods, cost of return by halfanorange
If something is ordered and it turns out to be faulty, it can be sent back at the seller's cost or left for collection. But, if someone travels a long distance to buy something then when they get it home it turns out to be faulty is it the buyer who has to go to the trouble an expense to return it?

Small Claims Court - Venue? by Fred Finisterre
If I make a claim via the small claims court (or via moneyclaim.gov.uk), is there a physical hearing at an actual court. If so, would it be the nearest to the claimant, the person filed against, or just whichever court the papers are filed at? What if they are filed via the afore-mentioned web-site? Thanks, Fred.

Police chief admits Menezes mistakes by Dave Baker
Sir Ian Blair, Britain's most senior police chief, has admitted that Scotland Yard made a "serious mistake" in failing to correct misleading stories about the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes. The Metropolitan Police Commissioner, whose conduct in the aftermath of the shooting is the subject of an official inquiry, said his force "could have put the record straight" about a number of...
