Unmanned spy planes to police Britain by
MM
The Independent carries this report.
It's about using "drone" (i.e. pilotless) aircraft to "counter
terrorism and aid police operations in Britain".
"The MoD is carrying out research and development to enable the spy
planes, which are equipped with highly sophisticated monitoring
equipment that allows them to secretly track and photograph suspects
without their knowledge, to be deployed within...

Ryanair have decided to renege on bookings made through price comparison

I presume this is because if you look directly they can monitor the IP
address and up the price if you keep coming back (like...

Not all bills of rights are equal by
Dr Quite
The Bill of Rights and Freedoms proposed by the Joint Select Committee on
Human Rights looks pretty dodgy. It feels like it was written in the 1990s -
before 9/11, before criticism of the European Convention on Human Rights had
gained any purchase, before the Government had opened its assault on
political and civil liberties.
The Committee recommends that it should be "ECHR plus"; it should...

Supervision Order by
greyprimer
Police are to apply for a special type of supervision order to put on Barry
George, the police do not trust him now he is free, and do not want him
living in his former home in Fulham, surely this has to go through a court
to grant this, instead of treating him as not guilty the police seem to be
treating him as if he is on licence

Fixed Penalty Bouncing by
Blah
Hi
NIPS require you to name the driver if it wasn't you.
Here's a new twist on the old chestnut of 'Not sure who was driving'..
Two mates were sharing the driving and got flashed, car owner got first
NIP, decided it was the mate and sent it off and it duely arrived -
where he promptly named the owner and off it went again.
He's sending it off again.

non-paying company by
Stephen[_2_]
Hello,
I have been having problems getting paid by supermarket W M Morrisons
plc. I did some work (as an independent contractor) in May 2008 and I
still have not been paid.
First they insisted that I invoice them on one of their forms. Can a
company withhold payment if it is not on one of their forms? Surely as
a customer, you get what the vendor decides to give you? If I shop at
Morrisons, I...

Druggie gets off with slap on wrist by
tvaerskaegg@aol.com
A druggie caught having a fix was let off with a 12 month conditional
discharge by magistrates in blackpool:

It looks like the law needs to be seriously tightened up if this kind
of drug abuse is to be stamped out.

Mandatory Cycle Lanes by
judith
I have got myself in to trouble with the cyclists again.
Someone used the term "mandatory cycle lane" - I was not familiar with
this term and asked did they mean a cycle lane which it was mandatory
for cyclists to use - not being aware that there were such things.
I was told in no uncertain terms that all cycle lanes are mandatory or
advisory and:
There's only one meaning of Mandatory Cycle...

Independent: Adults have surrendered to the Lord of the Flies by
MM
Jenni Russel's article includes:
"Over the past couple of decades there has been a revolution in the
way adults and children relate to one another. Well-intentioned
initiatives, designed to protect children from being physically
chastised at school or at home, or from being assaulted by
paedophiles, have had the unintended consequence of snapping the wider
social bonds between the generations....

Mark to Market....good or bad, my views in this environment a by
frediesmith@googlemail.com
In my view the mark-to-market system of asset valuation is the best
system for valuing impaired assets. It forces enterprises to face
their problems and make the required decisions. Had the Japanese
adopted it early in their banking crisis around 1990, it would have
solved their problems quickly and the nation would now be much more
prosperous.
But in current climate mark-to-market is very...

Is insurance to be exploited by the law? by
JethroUK©
When Judge Judy finds anyone guilty of causing damage to car (as opposed to
anything else) - for some reason she excludes liability for any damage that
could be covered by insurance and so fines the guilty just for the 'excess'
e.g. damage £3000 = insurance covers £2950 = £50 excess
This is obviously morally wrong - but is it legally right?
I mean suppose it was a £3000 worth of damage to a...

Judges told to get tougher
By James Smith, sundaymirror.co.uk 10/08/2008
Courts are to get "beefed-up" guidelines to ensure greater consistency
in sentencing criminals.
A six-month inquiry found some judges and JPs are too lenient while
others hand out hefty punishments.
