uk.legal.moderated by mike
My ISP is NTL. Is there anyway I can post to u.l.m with confidence that the post (if acceptable to moderators) will appear? I am beginning to think that it is a waste of time having the moderated group if a vast number of people are disenfranchised!! Is anything being done about this problem?

Falsified evidence by Donna
I have recently been taken to the small claims court in the UK by my ex landlord for purported ex-damage done to a property I tenanted. The claim was completely fabricated and falsified evidence, including falsified invoices for work carried out to the property, were used to instigate the case. I eventually managed to prove that the evidence was false. Do I now have any grounds for a claim...

Illegal immigrant fights deportation by Theo_Delight@yahoo.co.uk
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/tayside_and_central/6756341.stm Just because she's been here illegally for seventy-eight years, she thinks she ought to be allowed to stay in the UK. It's not even as if she'd ever claimed political asylum, when she might have some sort of case. And even if she had, we know that America does not torture people. So will she be deported?

Broken families 'fuelling black crime' by Jimbo
JNugent wrote: It only assumes (as it must) that the offender knew right from wrong and knew that the crime was wrong. AIUI, someone who really doesn't know right from wrong is treated differently by the legal system. is that really true? i thought the law considers that ignorance of the law is not a defense?

Another disingenuous prosecution? by Theo_Delight@yahoo.co.uk
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/southern_counties/6744817.stm The retrial of Graham Coutts seems to have started to follow the pattern of the previous trial, with some statements made by the prosecuting counsel that may not be wholly accurate and others that are wholly irrelevant: He told the court Mr Coutts had been looking at "horrific" images on pornography websites the day before Miss...

Detention without trial - questions by Jethro
slow news day, so I'm pondering various things ... Assuming the government gets it's 90 days detention-without-trial powers, what rules surround the arrest of somenody under the legislation ? Are they allowed to inform someone of their arrest ? Or would the police be allowed to conceal such news ? If the police were allowed to conceal the news, how would they deal with a wife reporting her...

Rushdie by The Todal
Why? Why give him an honour now, and provoke the loony wing of the Muslims into more acts of terrorism in our streets? Has Rushdie actually written anything worthwhile in the last 10 years or done anything very much other than appear at parties with young women on his arm? If he deserved an honour why didn't he get it years ago? Damn, now we have to keep a special lookout for suspicious...

Are radar\laser detectors legal to use in the UK? by Karl Foley
As speed cameras are only used in accident blackspots, is the use of radar\laser detectors to give you advance warning of these blackspots legal in the UK? I know you can get GPS based versions of these but the GPS databases are not always up to date. I have read conflicting information. Some sites say they are legal because of the outcome of a 1998 court ruling, some sites mention a specific...

Holiday firm trying to reclaim undercharged money by NumboJumbo
Hi I'm hoping this is an easy one to answer and so any replies will be greatly received. Basically, we've booked a holiday through a travel agent and the amount we would be charged was verbally agreed over the phone. On that basis we paid 10% deposit of the overall amount by credit card. A few days later we got a printed receipt for the deposit as well as confirmation of the amount that was...

Claiming from an ISP (Talktalk) for a cockup by Talktalk victim
Anyone offer any pointers for this one? I recently signed up with Talktalk for broadband and to put it simply they totally cocked it right up destroying my BT line and existing broadband in the process. They couldn't put things right and it was left to BT to sort Talktalks mess out leaving me without a landline or any broadband for 2 weeks.
