"cheques" in junk mail by
M James Hunt
I received a piece of junk mail that had a cheque in it (the idea
being that you convert this cheque to a loan at an extortinate
interest rate). It had my name, the amount in numbers and words, an
account number, a cheque number a signature, and absolutely no
indication that it was not a cheque.
Does this make it a cheque? Would I have been able to cash it?

maternity leave query by
drd
All,
Employee on maternity leave was due to return on 14 June. On 1st June I
receive a note saying she'll be back in September. I had previously been
told by a third party that she may want to return to work later but I
confirmed that written notice was required.
Her normal contract requries one month notice.
Her maternity acknowledgment letter specifically says 28 days notice
requried...

Overpaid PAYE tax? by
sk8terg1rl
Hi group,
Here are my statement of earnings for my 2 years at uni. This
represents "casual pay" work at college. I do a bit of private
tutoring paid for with cash and make a bit from the stock market
(dividends + capital gain).
Casual college pay + private tutoring work is definitely under £5k.
Stock dividends + capital gain also definitely under £9.2k

I don't want granny to be exhumed. by
Alasdair
I refer to the recent news article where several dead people had to be
exhumed in connection with an investigation into the running of a care
home in Somerset. What would happen if the relatives refused
permission for the exhumation? Would the police have to petition for
a court order or could they go ahead regardless?.
I remember some years ago that the police exhumed an old lady...

Madeleine McCann - really abducted? by
Luddite
Because the media is at fever pitch over the possibility that Madeleine
McCann was abducted and everyone seems to want to nail Murat for it few
people would dare to sit back and ask questions.
Take the parents of Madeleine for instance, few have dared to criticise the
parents for leaving their kids on their own. The parents go for a meal,
leaving a four year old and two two-year-old twins on...

Just got my new contract by
*©*´¯`·.¸¸.·´·DõKtör åvãíäñçhë·`·.¸¸.·´¯`·-·|
Hello, All!
My new contract says i have to give 3 months notice if i want to leave, this
seems like a long time, and almost makes me unemployable to any other
business doesnt it?
i have worked for the company for almost 5 years, without any trouble at
all, but one day i may want to leave, but 3 months notice is a very long
time in my opinion

Bank charges and DD by
johannes
My mortgage is paid by DD on the last day of the month. I usually send
a cheque to the branch a week in advance by first class mail. This
has never failed, until this month - that is. A cheque was sent on the
24/5 and I was concerned that the cheque wasn't drawn and called up the
branch. They told me that they are no longer allowed to open any post,
it sent on un-opened to a handling centre. The...

Liability on household bill - false name by

I posted to this group regarding my housemate, who is planning to move

Corruption and how to deal with it. by
d.doelcam@gmail.com
I've got a couple of questions about corruption.
I'm part of a non-profit organisation that is devoted to helping its
members learn and develop in a particular subject. It makes money from
selling books on the subject (a discount is given to members), from
membership fees and from conferences.
It has a board of directors that have been behaving strangely for some
time. Just recently they've...

Autoexpress and BTCC tickets by
Mark Hewitt
I'm hearing this second hand so please forgive me if I'm light on the
details.
Apparently Autoexpress have recently had an offer whereby if you subscribe
to the magazine you will get two free tickets to a British Touring Car
Championship race (value approx £50).
However several people have gotten a letter saying the tickets were 'out of
stock' (even though tickets are still publically...

How much privilege is extended to witnesses at an inquest? As the
rules of evidence are laxer, is the protection against defamation also
broader?

Credit card used to settle debt - is it legal tender? by
galaxyofshrimp2@yahoo.com
I issued a County Court claim against a company to recover money owed
to me.
It later turned out that the company credited the amount owed to my
credit card account just before I issued my claim. They didn't inform
me of this - instead they reiterated the reasons why they weren't
going to pay!
So although I appear to have recovered the original debt, I'm £30 out
of pocket due to the court fee I...

Divorce, Pension Earmarking, A-Day, Mess! by
FoggyTown
Can anyone direct me to some on-line information regarding how A-Day
affects pension earmarking (NOT splitting) orders? I have a situation
where my 1996 divorce order stated that, upon retirement, I would give
to my wife 85% of the maximum lump sum allowable under my pension
plan. Well, that wasn't too bad except that A-Day (6/4/06) changed
the maximum lump sum permissable from about 15% to 25%...

Judge's panel will hear flashing case.
By Frances Gibb, Legal Editor
The Times 9 June 2007
The trial next week of a Court of Appeal judge accused of flashing
will be heard by a rare panel of a judge sitting with two magistrates
because of the sensitivity of the case.
Timothy Workman, the most senior district judge for magistrates'
courts in England and Wales, will preside over the trial of Sir
