Is it just me, or does this look like a drunken man leaning over to be sick
in a gutter?
(Okay, this may be off topic for uk.legal but I see this as another great
folly which will involve billions of public money to subsidise a huge loss)

Working the system by
Smolley
I am surprised that a defendant can get a court case adjourned again and
again within the last few hours before the hearing.
This defendant, in his forties who already has an ASBO has been up for this
hearing four times now, but at the last minute his defence applies for an
adjournment. This causes considerable inconvenience to the witnesses who
have arranged for time off work and then has to...

Right of Way on Land by
Tom
Hi all.
I have just received a letter from a legal firm stating that I have no
right of way on land to the rear of my property. Said land used to be
owned by the council or local authority and was sold at auction in 1990.
The letter stated that I must remove my garden gate and cease "trespassing".
Now, I was thinking that since I have used this land as a short-cut for
40 years, then maybe I...

Document signatures by
Darren
I wonder if anyone can throw any light on this grey area?
I have recently received a document/letter from my employer outlining
a bonus payment if I stay with the company upto a particular date.
The director has not manually signed this document, instead he has
chosen to include an image (graphic) of his signature. I however have
signed this with ink.

MPs and unions have welcomed the influx of immigrants to the region.
A national survey found a growing number of Eastern Europeans intend
to stay permanently in the UK.

A good reason never to stay in a hotel room....? by
Chuckles The Scary Clown
http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,91210-1268694,00.html
ok, not a hotel room but the principle is the same.
Presumably there will be DNA from anyone who stayed in that room previously;
unless the cleaners are astonishingly efficient?
The phrase "clutching at straws" seems to be growing in emphasis by the
day........

'Action not jail' for paedophiles Jim Gamble, CEOP by

'Action not jail' for paedophiles
Child sex offenders should be encouraged to seek treatment rather than
threatened with jail terms, the police's child protection chief says.
Jim Gamble, of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP),
says answers need to be found outside the criminal justice system.
He believes some paedophiles, including child pornography offenders, can be...

Unclaimed Land Adjacent to my property by
Graham
Hi All
I hope you can help.
When we moved into our current house, we noticed that the greenhouse was
placed outside of the boundary lines by the previous occupiers and looks
like its been there many years. When we asked our solicitor he said that the
land was unclaimed or not registered to anyone, so we have continued to use
it. for bonfires and the greenhouse. The land is not large, its...

Building Contract. Please help. by
Howie
Hi all. Hope you can help.
I run a small building company with a business partner. We have a
written agreement (not a JCT contract, - just a document I wrote
- signed by both parties), to build a house extension.
For the reasons below, we have now spent £10,000 of our own money
and still not quite finished the job. There is approximately
£5,000 left to be paid but only as a final payment. We...

It's a worrying picture that suggests a significant minority of
British Muslims are alienated...

Financial ombudsmen - any use? by
Dave
I have a problem with an insurance company (Barclays, formally
Woolwich). We had subsidence which is covered by insurance. The
contractors have basically messed us about for several years.
1) They splashed paint on our new PVC windows. As compensation they have
agreed to replace the bathroom suite, but despite agreeing this about 2
years ago, they have still not got around to it. We have...

Small Claims Court representation by
FoggyTown
If someone has entered a claim (as a claimant) in SCC and it goes to a
hearing, can the claimant bring someone to the hearing with him to act
as his representative (NOT a solicitor) to present the claim to the
court on his behalf? (Assume the person he brings with him is more
articulate, a better public speaker, and has a better appreciation of
the principles involved.)

unfit by cannabis? by
FCS
What has been reported in the news-journalism
sector but not, so far, the more focussed of the
UK's scientific press is that cannabis use has
no real effect on task-competence in a physical
environment when subjects are already suitably
trained in performing such tasks.
Whilst the likes of George Michael have done
very little in recent years to clarify how the effects
of a substance which stays...

Broken washing machine:repair or replace by
Ken Baker
I bought a washing machine around five months ago from an online retailer.
The machine was always very noisy, but I paid this little heed as I only
used it when I was out of the house. A couple of days ago the machine
failed quite spectacularly, displacing the top panel. A cursory examination
inside indicates that a concrete ballast weight was incorrectly secured
during manufacture (only one of...

Using the Privy Council to make law by
Alasdair
"He is also reported to be intending to ask the cross-party Privy
Council to review the case for allowing intercept evidence in court".
Thus says the BBC report at
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6715885.stm
I thought all legislation had to be passed by Parliament but this way
of doing things seems to short-circuit the system.
Is this an abuse of the Royal Prerogative?

Vista by

A bit off topic, really, but here goes.
A colleague of mine has bought a new Dell laptop, bottom of the range model,
but with Windows Vista. It runs pathetically slowly. I'm not very familiar
with Vista, and I'm tempted to advise her to demand a refund or to format
the hard disk and install XP.
Is there a setting in Vista, somewhere, to tell it to move into a higher
gear and behave exactly...

inmates are reaching the end of their sentences but cannot be freed
