legality of medical claims by
Trent SC
I was wondering where the law stands on advertisers, manufacturers and
promoters who make medical claims for foods and household goods such as
shampoos (typically along the lines of "cures cancer", "reverses baldness",
etc).
Are they merely transgressing advertising codes of conduct, or are there
specific laws in place that prevent, say, all but authorised, tested and
peer-reviewed...

excessively overcharged by taxi by
tonyjeffs
..It was a private hire car, hired directly from the owner who had
given me his card previously.
I phoned him directly because we needed a 7-seater, and I knew he had
one;
It normally costs in the region of £10 to taxi from my house to the
city centre. I didn't ask for a price up front because it is such a
routine journey; and we had to divert slightly to pick up one more
passenger on the way. ...

Another train fare question by
Jo Lonergan
The "Train Fare" saga has made me wonder about something that happened
to me this week.
I bought a cheap day return from Paddington ("London Terminals"), but
on the return journey the train stopped at a station which was more
convenient, so I got out. I was expecting, especially after following
the Train Fare thread, to have problems with the staff at the barrier,
but on this occasion everyone...

Plod Forensics (IT) by
Mark[_9_]
Plod confiscate a desktop PC in connection with a non-sexual non-fraud
based 'crime' (more a disorder than crime, but crime under the law
nevertheless). They are looking for browser and word processing
history.
Does anyone know;
1.) what checks they are likely to make?
2.) what software they use to scour the disk drive?
3.) do they go digging for anything else like pr0n, emails or keywords
like...

Dogs Not Allowed by
David J
Our local Post Office has a small 'Dogs Not Allowed' sign on it's
front door.
I can understand this where food & drink is for sale, or is being
consumed - Health & Safety rules, etc. But this is just a Post Office
with a tiled floor..
Is this just a jobsworth flaunting his power, or is there a valid law
in operation here?

Public Order Act (section 5) by
knirirr@gmail.com
Would anyone be able to suggest any answer to this?
The situation is being charged under the act mentioned above with making
an offensive gesture to a passing motorist, with an 80 pound fixed
penalty on the way. If one were to refuse to pay the penalty and the CPS
were to decide it worth prosecuting, what sort of penalties are usually
meted out for this "offence"?

Apartment Management Company Problems by
BobS
Not sure if this is the correct forum. Apologies if it isn't.
We own the lease of a ground floor apartment in a block. The block was
constructed about 4 years ago. Recently a severe water leak developed in the
apartment 3 floors above with the result that all the apartments between us
and the leak have been damaged to a greater or lesser degree.
The management company arranges the buildings...

Ofcom and `Great Global Warming Swindle' by
Ian Jackson
In Ofcom's ruling on the `Great Global Warming Swindle' , they say
amongst other things that (pdf page 20 onwards) (paraphrased):
The view promulgated by parts 1-4 of the programme, that climate
change is not man-made, was settled as a falsehood by the time the
programme was made. In their view, because the question was settled,
it wasn't a matter of controversy.
This seems to lead to the...

Building Reg by
mrsukyankee
We have had an offer accepted on a house. It is listed as 3 bedroom with a rear extension. In doing the searchs, our solicitor has discovered that the extension and loft conversion (the 3rd bedroom) which were supposedly built in 1998 have not gotten either planning permission or building regs (these were 'pending'). We are not concerned with the planning permission.
My questions is (which...

TDS Complications by
Loki117
Good afternoon,
I have a very specific question about the tenancy deposit scheme and the Housing act which gouverns it. Basically I recently found out that I have not been provided with the required prescribed information when I signed into my last AST. Now there is little argument that I have a case as I have a letter from the Tenancy dispute service who where supposed to be handling the...

Train Fare - Summons ... with a twist by
100
This isn't a clear-cut fair-avoidance case, so please read it through. I was stopped onboard a train on May 14th, and asked to show my ticket. I showed my (valid) ticket to the inspector. He asked me for my Young Persons card. I looked through my bag, but couldn't find it.
He took a statement from me, because I did not have £20 or my Y-P card.
The ticket was refused by the inspector, and...

copyright damages claim by
Ian & Hilda Dedic
HI I'm new here, but I'd like to find out where I stand.
I've just had a claim for damages issued against me (as the bill
payer)for a driving game they claim I downloaded via my broadband
connection.
I do not know if this actually happened or not (it may be another
underage member of my household) I certainly haven't downloaded anything
of that nature.

Clubs and Societies by
cyrilsstuff@gmail.com
Greetings all,
I have a question about how social clubs are regulated.
I am a member of a social club that meets up once or twice a month for
drinks and then several times a year organises an outing or day trip.
I have concerns about how it is run and the legal implication thereof.
I think it best to demonstrate my concerns in list form.

This supermarket runs a discount card for its employees & abuse of this card is a dismissal offence. one of her colleagues (a generally horrible person ho has been abusive & obnoxious to my wife in the past) has been caught abusing this card.

Traffic lights with no green or orange lights by
Jon Ribbens
In London there seems to be an increasing trend to put horizontal
"shutters" on the green and/or orange lights on traffic lights.
These are presumably supposed to make it so that you can only see
the lights when you are close to them, although sometimes the
shutters are at such a steep angle that you can't even see the lights
until after you've crossed the line (sometimes not even then).
Given...

Police Faking Evidence by

I'm facing trial for fraud. It involves a receipt I have for a cash payment. It has been alleged that I tricked someone into signing it. I'm happy with my legal team, but I wondered if anyone else has a different perspective, or any insight into my situation.
The police have faked 2 seperate pieces of evidence.
The first piece of "evidence" is a copy of the receipt in question "found" on my...

Council tax rebate? by
ABC[_2_]
If the local council fail to provide services that I am forced to pay for -
e.g. emptying bins (because of a strike) - can I claim a rebate?
I know it will only amount to a few pence in reality - I'm just interested
in the answers I get.

Direct Debit guarantee - any legal standing? by
Roger Hayter
A large british telecommunications company has charged me some 200GBP
for work they carried out which I think should have been done at their
cost. About 3 months into the dispute (which I did raise here, but it
created little legal interest) they withdrew the price of this work from
my bank account by direct debit (which they hold for the purpose of
paying regular bills) without my...

Faulty appliance written off by engineer by
Bob Hardwell[_5_]
We bought an AEG fridge/freezer in January 2008 from Comet. The
appliance was in a clearance sale as it had been on display and the
branch was closing for refurbishment. We received a discount plus an
extra discount because there was a small scratch on the door. The retail
price was GBP 749.99 and we paid GBP 524.99. As far as I am concerned
the item was sold as new and carries the full 2...
