I agree - I just think that's a poor show that a fairly crucial part of
the criminal justice system is a voluntary organisation.

Like magistrates? We do 95% of all criminal work, and nobody gets paid
(Sob!)

You get paid, but not in money. Pleasure perhaps (aka "job
satisfaction"), or prestige, or the sense of power and control, or
just as an alternative to having to do something worse. *You* know
what payment you get, and in what currency, just as I do when I
volunteer to wash up after supper. I'm afraid I don't believe in pure
altruism. Good that you choose to achieve whatever it is through
something honourable.

Maybe not, but you get a free inflated ego.

Quite easily.

Just go and commit a fairly minor crime within the area covered by his
court :-)

That is *easy* to arrange. Go and commit an offence in his area and make
sure you get caught. :-)

You don't need one. You're entitled to attend & observe.

Yes it's 'my' court, just like the **** is my pub and **** is my town.. It
ain't ownership, it's membership.

Very handy! Thanks to both Joe and Bystander for the info.

Sorry I missed this the first time round, assuming that you're a
prosecution witness speak with the "Officer in the Case" (police officer
running things) he will arrange via the CPS to book you a room at a local
hotel, this should be done in advance, the idea being that you shouldn't be
worying about where you're going to sleep that night when you're about to
give evidence.

Each CPS office (and most police forces now) have a witness liason section
and this kind of booking is bread and butter to them.

If OTOH you're a defence witness, tell him to plead guilty and you'll save
having to go on the trip g actualy the defence solicitors should make the
same sort of arrangements for you as the CPS will.
