I sent them an email earlier as well. Hopefully we'll get replies.

I've just received this reply from the Statutory Publications Office:-

"Thank you for advising us of this error.* We have amended the document
and will republish it to the Statute Law Database website, the corrected
document should be available for viewing early next week."

Me too.

I take it the reply to you also had:

"I apologise for any inconvenience this has caused. "

and asked for a read receipt. I *do* like a bit of old-style civil
service desire to round off the file with an acknowledgement.

A few years ago, my mate had his VW Golf stolen and burned out.
It had factory GTi wheels on it (the car wasn't a GTi, the wheels were
on it when he bought the car), which is the reason his insurance
company refused to pay out.
"Altered from standard" without informing the ins co.

I once bought a secondhand BMW 3 series that came with the invoice
listing all the extras that had been put on at the factory, including a
'trip computer' that was only available for BMW 5 series at the time.
Was that "altered" from standard?

What if those GTi wheels were similarly supplied from new?

The wheels were GTi wheels, but they were on a base spec model, probably
fitted by a previous owner.
Thing is, unless you know the exact spec your car left the factory with it's
a bit difficult to know what's standard and what isn't.

The ins co. were dying to get out of paying out by any means, my mate was
young and he'd only had the car/insurance for a month or so, he had no
chance ;(

What is modified seems a minefield - do manufacturers options count as
modifications, does it matter whether the option is factory fitted or
dealer fitted ? How many people tell their insurers that they have had a
towbar fitted ?

Yay! Usenet made a difference...

I wonder if any case went one way when it should have gone the other over
this?

A colleague of mine had difficulties with his insurance company when
he bought a used Saab recently.

It had had a standard dealer upgrade installed by the previous owner,
where the engine power was increased by a firmware upgrade.

He asked the insurance company to provide quotes for the car both in
its current state, or if he were to go to a Saab dealer and have it
downgraded to the standard as originally supplied.

The insurance company refused to cover it *at all* because it had been
modified, and weren't interested in the the idea of downgrading it.

It took him ages to persuade the insurance company that this was a
standard dealer upgrade, designed into the specification of the car.

OTOH, I recently had to replace all of the wheels on my daughter's
Corsa (which is probably worth about £300), because she keeps driving
up the kerb to park it safely (see other threads about pavement
parking!). We went to a breaker's yard and got a set of wheels from an
Astra.

Is our insurance therefore void?

I'd rather think that 'neverwas' made a difference.

I wonder if any case went one way when it should have gone the other over
this?

Probably not, because I don't think that Judges or Magistrates rely upon
web sites (yet!). It might have made a difference to police action,
because they don't have the time or the luxury to look things up in
Archbold and debate the issues.

The outcome, for me, is a decrease of confidence in the Statute Law
Database.

Or that the secondhand car they just bought has a towbar fitted.
