Unhappy Motorcycle catergory missing from license

I past my motorcycle test in 1967! Car test came later. Eventually a little red license was received. This was 'converted' in 1976 and it appears the catergory A (motorcycle entitlement) was left off. I continued to drive motorcycles on and off for years, but recently found my license was not complete! Several expensive phone calls to DVLA (and DSA, Traffic Area Commissioners ....) revealed it seems there are no remaining records to confirm my passed test.
I can remember the test centre, the weather, approximate date, examiner, most of the test (route, examiner stepping out in front of me with his hand raised for the 'emergency stop', etc.) ... but this apparently means nothing.
The DVLA response is: my fault for not spotting their error! They suggest I start again with my CBT!!!
I am considering buying a M/bike, but have not riden one for some years and thought it prudent to take some sort of revision/re-aquaint course and checked for cost. WOW!! More than half the cost of a new bike for the complete course up to the test!!

SURELY there is some way of avoiding a long and expensive CBT/M-C Theory test/ Bike test route to something I already have??
