Is the cost of getting a replacement MOT certificate "intrinsic" or
"consequential"? I wouldn't want them to pay for a new test, but a copy
certificate to replace the lost one seems like a fair cop. Similarly the
fee to replace the tax disc, rather than the cost of a new one.

No, and you don't even have to find them. DVLA have access to databases
of insurance policies and MOT certificates. The disc arrives about
three days after you pay. I don't remember there being any credit card
charge, but its possible.

I would disagree.
Existing car tax expired end of Sept. We were off on hols 18 Sept. and
returning early Sept.
Why pay £2.50 extra to do it online when theres no hurry (or so I thought).

I wouldn't rely on that. Since you are required to buy *and display* the
disc (in the prescribed manner), keeping your car on the road on or after
1st September without a disc is surely an offence. It would be an offence
if the disc had simply slipped onto the floor.

Do you keep the car on the road, or in a private driveway?

Yep. MOT & Ins certs now in ether.
Not a huge problem as I have duplicates of ins and the car has been MOT'd
this week

I got some satisfaction (in the legal sense) by calling the relevant
[major branch] PO's complaints department.

Sorry for being slow on the draw, but I've been out of circulation. I
haven't read the full thread yet so this may have already been said...

If you paid for but didn't receive your disc, you don't have to pay the £7
charge (as it clearly states on the V20). I range the DVLA last week and
explained my situation, and they said they would email the local DVLA
office, and that I should pop down there with my registration document.

Went yesterday, took 10mins... Job done.
