Property Law? Service Charge Balancing Demand after buying flat by
jacky.evanno@btinternet.com
Hi,
I bought a leasehold flat in October 2006. The service charges for the
year ending september 2006 were paid accordingly during that year by
the previous owner. The freeholder is now asking me to pay for extra
costs which were not budgeted but incurred during that period.
Who is meant to pay for those costs?
Should this have been picked up during the conveyancing?

fixed penalties advice pls by
Oxymel of Squill
Hi
Could anyone clue me up about fixed penalties?
Got so frustrated with local authority not emptying the bin and then telling
lies about it that I threatened to tip out the bin on their premises. Then
they missed the bin and lied about it again so I did, in their One Stop Shop
They've sent me a fixed penalty notice (Environmental Protection Act 1990
section 87), but someone told me it can't...

Witness at Crown Court by
News Admin
Afternoon!
I'm meant to be appearing as a witness at a Crown Court later this year.
Unfortunately, the court is nearly a hundred miles away from where I
live. I've been told that they'll try to 'get round to me' on the first
day of the trial, but it's not guaranteed.
While I don't mind the expense of taking the day off (I'm self-employed)
and driving there and back on one day, it becomes a lot...

Old law about taxi cabs having to carry hay? by

Expenses from Police by
Paul Baker
My son was on a daytrip to London with some friends. On their way back
to the station one of them was arrested for an alledged assualt
because he fitted the description given to the Police.
When they viewed CCTV footage of the assault he looked nothing like
the person and was released.
By this time he had missed the last train home and, as he had a day
return ticket he had to pay out for...

BAILII by
Alasdair
I was trying to find a law report today and, naturally, went to BAILII
but I see their website has totally changed. It now seems to have
only a series of links to other "sponsored" sites but nothing to give
free access to law reports.
Am I missing something or does BAILII no longer offer the service it
used to?
The government have put statute law on the web for free; perhaps they
should do...

Finding results of trial? by
bealoid
Someone I know was prosecuted.
I'd like to know what they were accused of, and if they were convicted.
I don't want to ask them. I know their name, and I know when they went
to court.
What's the easiest way?
The case doesn't seem to have been covered by the local press.

Acquiring An 'assent' [title Deed Transfer] by
Hazelohyes
I am carrying out the administration on my late uncle's estate (UK law). So far I have done the probate which was straight forward enough, however, now I need to transfer the Title deeds of his property to myself (which he left me in his will).
I cannot find anywhere a book/website/helpline etc that deals with this in more than a couple of lines? Conveyancing books hardly cover it. I need...

Court awards and collecting on it by
Martin
Hi Guys
I won a case in the small claims court and the judge made an order
stating that the defendant should pay me by the 18th Jan. So far I've
not received a cheque from him. He's quite an ignorant piece of work and
I don't expect him to pay up without a fight.
What's the next step? It's not a large sum of money, only £140 but I
would like to receive it, or failing that cause him as much...

"Managing director" by
D.M. Procida
I know that being a company director means having a certain legal
status. Does "managing director" mean anything, and does it mean the
person is actually a company director?
More generally, if someone is described as (say) "Human Resources
Director" or "Director of Inhuman Efficiency Savings" does that say
anything about actual legal directorhood?

Licence required to listen to radio at work? by
Tx2
I heard something this afternoon on the radio, Radio 2 - Steve Wright -
but only caught the tail end, so would like clarification.
It was from a group of workers who had had their radio removed from
their work area due to licencing laws. This wasn't a shop, it was, AIUI,
a factory floor.
The program host, Steve Wright, read out a list of 'costs' that would be
incurred if one were to obtain...

paid lunch breaks for 'part-time' workers by
Tony Mac
This is the situation my friend is in:-
In order to help look after his children, his employer (a government
department) has allowed him to change his hours, from 37 hours over 5 days,
to 37 hours over 4 days, and he has done this for a couple of years.
He would like to cut down to 35 hours over 4 days.
He has been told that they would allow this, but then he would lose all of
his paid lunch...
