Are students exempt from paying VAT? by
Alasdair
Visiting my local university library this evening, I noticed on the
tables a portable notice which said that as students were exempt from
paying VAT for purchases and they should produce their student ID
cards when purchasing anything. Does anyone know the details and the
fine print of this concession?
It might be worth my while signing on for a course at my local FE
college before buying an...

Denying Treatment by
bealoid
I've seen a few reports of angry smokers / drinkers who've been denied
treatment because the surgeon didn't want to treat someone who was
only going to get ill again.
I haven't seen any coverage about people being denied surgery after
attending A&E following an episode of deliberate self harm. (Although
it is easy to find horror stories about how people have been treated in
A&E after...

Hello,
Can anyone tell me what the definition of "hearsay evidence" is in
layman's terms?
I've found references via google but in legal-speak that I don't fully
understand. If I understand correctly, and I'm not sure I do, it seems
to be any evidence that is not given orally in court. Is that...

Public Liability Insurance by

Joe Bloggs & his Brother have a Property Development Company (not
limited).
They buy a building and demolish it and demolish the boundary wall with
the adjoining property.
They erect fencing two years ago but since then it has been vandalized.
The owner of the property next door have wrote to the brothers 6 months
ago asking them to secure their land but they have constantly refused
to. The...

European Principles of Contract Law? by
Tommo
I was reading an article on Wikipedia about the Contra Proferentem rule
(link below). It appears to have been written by an American, and
states that the rule applies in various states in the US, but also
refers to it being codified in international legislation such as the
European Principles of Contract Law.
I have never heard of this. Does anyone know anything about...

IN VERY SIMPLE TERMS HEARSAY EVIDENCE IS ANYTHING SAID OTHER THAN IN
THE PRESENCE OR HEARING OF THE ACCUSED/DEFENDENT.
HEARSAY IS ALLOWED TO BE GIVEN IN COURT AT THE DESCRETION OF THE TRIAL
JUDGE.
QUITE OFTEN THE DEFENCE WILL OBJECT ON VARIOUS GROUNDS BUT AT THE END
OF THE DAY IF THE TRIAL JUDGE FEELS THE PREDUJICIAL VALUE IS OUTWEIGHED
BY THE EVIDENTIAL VALUE HE MAY ALLOW IT BUT ONLY MAY!.

Definition of occupancy of a house. by
tonyjeffs
We own an empty house. It is a condition of the insurance that it does
not remain unoccupied for 120 days, and we are approaching that. If I
stay in it for 48 hours starting today, would that fulfil the
occupancy requirement?

How can he be stopped? by
Persona non Grata
Okay, I had a longer version of this but, for reasons of brevity - and,
possibly clarity - I felt it necessary to discard that and post this
abbreviated one.
Until recently I was sharing a house with an individual and everything
appeared to be okay. Then, after I'd been there a while, things began to turn
creepy - and I mean *really* creepy.
I have a very close friend, who just happens to...

Thanks.

Service charges by
GB
ISTR that there is a 9 month limit for issuing service charge notices after
the end of the service charge year. Is that right?
I ask because my flat has a year-end of 31.3.06. I just received the
statement on 5 Jan 07. It was posted second class and I suspect it was
posted this week, ie ater 31.12.06. No postmark or franking on the envelope.

Statute Law Database by
Don Aitken
The DCA has sneakily put the new Statute Law Database online without
any fanfare - see http://www.statutelaw.gov.uk/Home.aspx
All legislation currently in force should be there.

GBH for injuring someone with a car by
google@woodall.me.uk
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/hampshire/6226999.stm
"A 17-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous
bodily harm and driving offences."
Assuming (it's not clear from the article) that the woman didn't get
out of the car and hit someone, would GBH be a normal possible charge
for a car accident unless you deliberately drove into or over someone?

Company Refused to Cancel Order by

I recently ordered an item from http://www.gadgetstuff.com using a Visa
Electron.
They kept putting the expected delivery date back so I decided to order
elsewhere to ensure I got the item from in time for Christmas from a
supplier who stated they had it in stock.
For two weeks, I have been calling an 0870 number from a mobile because
I can't call from my employers phone - that would be...

House purchase? by
Alan Holmes
My son is trying to buy his first house, rather foolishly, he went to a
mortgage broker to make all the arrangements.
He is having difficulty in getting the thing finalised, the solicitor, who
is conveniently based in Scotland is causing uneccessary delays.
How can he hurry the process?

Will question by

On Mon, 1 Jan 2007 21:05:07 +0000, Sharon put finger to keyboard and
typed:
I live with my long term boyfriend in a house that we both own (with a
small mortgage) as joint tenants. We have decided that maybe it would be a
good idea to get some sort of will drawn up in case the worst should happen
to one or both of us. We would like to leave each other our worldy goods,
and if we should...
