Offer and Acceptance by The Todal
Maybe this is a bit specialised, but it is still interesting. Consider this scenario: a claimant is pursuing a claim for personal injury, worth quite a lot of money. Defendant makes a settlement offer. The trial date is very close. Claimant's solicitor asks defendant's solicitor: are you willing to increase your offer? The answer is no. Claimant's solicitor sends a fax to defendant's...

New law re ageism by JanieB
This is a follow up to a previous thread. Until I can post to usenet I'm stuck with Google I have got a job. I was told it was Temp-Perm. But the job has been advertised externally. Only after I had been there a couple of days. As it is a privately owned company there is no rule as to a job having to be advertised outside the company. I have to say that the chap I will be covering in the...

Irish citizens and "settled" status by Marco
Do all Irish citizens living in the UK have "settled" status (i.e. Indefinite Leave to Remain, or ILR), or do they need to apply for it like all other EEA citizens? The Wikipedia entry for Indefinite Leave to Remain http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indefinite_leave_to_remain claims that they do have settled status, but I couldn't find anything to back this up on the Home Office website.

What's the best way to get the police to act? by Alasdair
If my car gets stolen or broken into or, indeed, my house gets burgled, the local police don't trouble to visit. They just give me a crime number over the phone and tell me to contact my insurance company. If, however, I told them I were a pharmacist or a doctor and the car contained powerful drugs, the police would be there like a shot and no effort to catch the thieves would be too...

Catalogue orders - delivery by Iain
Hi, (2 try) Probably quite a common scenario: Another family member placing an order by phone to be delivered to me. Two failed attempts at delivery. I phoned up the delivery company to arrange another delivery; it was to be the following day - a morning delivery starting from 7am. They didn't deliver. I then made 3 calls to the catalogue company to try and sort out delivery.

Self-Employment question by Billy H
In October 2005 I registered self-employed and worked for a couple of weeks as a painter and decorator. In Novemeber I entered employment. The local tax offce told me I could remain both self employed and employed so I made no ammendments tot he records at the tax office and remain nominally self-employed. In October of this year I was made unemployed (although I am still 'self-employed').

What is the meaning of PQE? by Peter Santa
Could anyone help me to understand the meaning of Post Qualifying Experence? Does it mean how many years somebody worked after getting the LLB or it can be used only for those years the person worked after qualified as solicitor?

Can I sue for damages for a breach? by mt1206
Hi, I hope this is the right place for advice on this. I started a company in May this year. By June I was looking for investment. After advertising, I was approached by a company in August offering to do a 'report' for £400 - and if the report was favourable, then this company would take it further. No problem. Paid up, sent off the business plan and the questionnaire they gave me and 5 days...

Employment law - problem staff - pregnancy by davidwood@hotmail.com
Hi All We are a small company of just less than 50 employees. One member of staff joined us in March 2006. We have considered termining their employment a number of times. But we are an easy going company (part of the problem). They have been off 'sick' for the last 6 weeks (we think studying as they went to their exam while signed off and staying away in the most busy part of the year when work...

Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982 by Old Codger
wrote: Hello, Can anyone tell me if there is a copy of the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982 online? I did a google search but could not find it. I see Nick has pointed you to a copy. The official site (www.opsi.gov.uk) carries Acts of Parliament from 1988 and Statutory Instruments (Regulations) from 1987 so you won't find your legislation there.

Liability for damage to hired goods by Andy Pandy
If I hire something and it gets damaged through no fault of my own, eg by an unknown third party, or a freak act of nature, then who is liable for the damage, me or the owner (in the absence of a clause in the hire contract specifying this)? TIA -- Andy
