Case 1946 by
Andrew Wilson
In 1946 a man is glassed in a pub requiring hospital treatment. What would
the assailant have been charged with in those days and what would have been
the maximum and minimum sentence that the judge could pass under the law at
that time?
Many thanks

Ending a tenancy agreement after 2 days by
Mr Rie
Hello all,
We signed a tenency agreement two days ago, the credit check went through
yesterday and today we were given the keys and did a run through of the
inventory with the Agents.
We only had time to view the property (fully furnished) once before this, at
the time we did not look into every cupboard and corner. We did note that a
couple of internal door handles were loose and these...

Notice of Proposal: Prohibition of Waiting by
Hywel Jenkins
Our local authority's Legal & Democratic Services department has issued
a notice that it intends to paint double yellow lines not far from where
I live.
Many other residents and I believe that this will increase the speed of
traffic along the road as a "traffic-calming" measure (parked cars) will
be removed, leaving a road that is approx. 500 metres long and
reasonably straight. We already...

Is my sister entitled to a British passport? by
Marcus Fox
My understanding of the legislation (British Nationality Act 1981) is thus:
A child who was born in the United Kingdom on or after 1 January 1983 will
be a British citizen if either the father or the mother is a British citizen
and both are married. Otherwise the child takes the nationality of the
mother. A child who was born in the United Kingdom on or after 1 January
1983 will also be a British...

Family Loan by
PL
Some while back I loaned my brother a 'not insignificant' sum of money,
as a deposit, to buy a home in Spain. Everything was done / agreed
informally by email and as a security, he pledged two life assurance
policies.
Since originally lending the money I have found out that my brother is
an alcoholic and that, as a direct consequence, his home and work life
is suffering, to the point...

Renunciation of British nationality by
Nick
I recently read of someone who was renouncing their British nationality and
applying for Belgian nationality.
1 Is it so easy to renounce British nationality?
2 Is Belgian nationality so easy to apply for?
I think that this was because they disagreed with British Government
policies.

Metric signs by
ndp
Do any of this esteemed gathering have an opinion as to whether metric road
signs are legal. I came across a metal height restriction barrier today with
the height in metres. I had to stop to covert into feet and inches before
driving on but in retrospect I feel that it could have been an expensive
accident if my car had been 2 inches taller.
I believe the Americans got their yards and metres...

Illegal Music... Or Not? by
Dr. Compynei
Hi All,
Supposing I obtained music of an artist who was not tied to a record label
performing music online.
They had no problem of be saving/sharing/burning to CD their music, so long
as it was not sold for profit to myself or the artist was not credited.
This was an agreement with the artist, but then they were later signed to a
major record label. What is the position legally on this?...

Can news/sports footage be used as evidence? by
Gorf
Particularly if the perpetrator had (up to that point) got away with
his crime?
I was wondering if Sebastion Loeb's irresponsibility for driving half a
car on the public roads in Greece would get him into trouble if it
happened over here. Specifically, he broke part of the rear of his car
during the Acropolis rally, and the rear started to disintegrate as he
drove the car back to service on...

Company name disputes by

I have recently had correspondance from a UK company claiming that I am
using their name and that I should consider changing it. On
investigation this is what I have found. I have been trading as a sole
trader under the name of (example) My First Company, since October of
last year and have documents, legal papers etc to prove this. The
company I have been contacted by have registered as a...

Yet another sale of goods question :-) by

If an item is advertised for sale as have a free gift supplied with it,
what remedy does a customer have if the item turns out not to have a free
gift after they buy it?
To give a bit more detail on this specific case: A product (a CD) is
advertised on a supplier website as having a "Bonus DVD" supplied with it.
The same product is available elsewhere with no advertised extras. A ...

Three month time limit on Travel and Subsistance Claims by
Wedell
Employer is talking about imposing a three month time limit on travel and
subsistance claims being submitted by employees, however, I'm left wondering
if this is watertight because I thought claims should be valid for up to six
years (as long as there is evidence to support the claim) and by imposing a
time limit, it could be construed as being unfair? A bit of googling seems
to suggest...

debt recovery agency by

Hi,
It would be greatly appreciated if anybody could advise me on the
following . I have today received a letter from a debt collection
agency chasing an ammount of £109.72 for something I bought in a shop
approximately 18 months ago. I paid for this there and then and now
after 18 months I cannot find the receipt to prove so.
I contacted the collection agency to inform of the above and...

Property border help!!! by
Corelog
Hi all,
I've got a bit of a problem, and I'm having trouble getting a legal
opinion on it - my solicitor says there's nothing that can be done.
My neighbour recently extended their property a foot over the boundary
with my property - building onto the border was prohibited by a
covenant on the deed, but nobody thinks this is a problem.
Now my neighbour wants three more feet for his drains and...
