Illegal or not? by
Scott
With the current price of copper being so high, pre 1992 copper coins
are worth over twice their face value. Unfortunately melting them down
for scrap is illegal, however the thought occurred to me what if the
melting down occurred outside UK jurisdiction? Does it make a
difference if done inside/outside the EU, is it an extraditable offence?

Evidence of identity for conveyencing by
Nick
There are other instances where you need to prove your identity and
particularly that you are a British subject eg employment. What is the
problem with getting hold of a copy birth certificate.

Unauthorised use of cable TV service by
Mark Goodge
Where I live, it's not too difficult to find a slightly dodgy bloke in
a pub who will sell you a "chipped" cable TV box, which allows you to
watch all the premium channels without needing to pay a subscription.
And so-called "scanner" boxes, which will do much the same thing, are
readily available on eBay.
Now, it's fairly obvious that using one of these is a breach of the
cable company's...

Are we stuffed? by
kt
Hi All
We have a customer take an amp of ours for sale about 2 years ago and
then not pay for it, as well as leaving money owing on a repair we had
done for him (a good customer up until that point.) We reluctantly
started court proceedings after giving him ample opportunity to pay (or
simply give it back.) We were awarded the money but he has just
avoided paying, including avoiding bailiffs. ...

Council Tax and bailiffs by
David Booth
In an attempt to get a sensible answer (as opposed to the unhelpful replies
from another NG!!) I'll try you folk on here.
My daughter has been contacted by bailiffs in respect of unpaid Council Tax
relating to a bungalow she no longer rents or lives in but to which she
still owes the money.
She has no fixed abode at present, staying with various friends, but using
my home as a postal...

Contempt of court between trial and appeal by
a@b.invalid
My reading suggests that a person can only be in contempt of court,
either under the CCA or common law, in advance or during a trial.
What I can't work out is whether it is possible to be in contempt during
the period between the trial and an appeal.
Any ideas?

Windscreen obstructions by
Gorf
Would I be right in thinking that a portable SatNav device is obscuring
the driver's view if it blocks any part of the windscreen swept by the
wipers, or is there a more scientific way of working out whether you'll
be pulled over?
I based my assumption on the "rule" that stone chips will result in a
failed MOT if they are within that area.

DPA question? by
Harry Bloomfield
Hi,
I have posted this to the unmoderated version of the group and so far
no useful replies.....
I have just received a parking charge notice from one of those cowboy
private parking organisations. As it happens I had a perfect right to
be parked in the car park where and at the time it is suggested they
are sending me the parking charge notice for, so it is my intention to
have a little...

Dentist malpractise by
neil
A relativeof mine had root canal work last year. The dentist said at
the
time it might not work and that ultimately the tooth might need to be
pulled. We gave it about 8 months of being on and then off antibiotics
and
then went back to the surgery. This time saw another dentist. We asked
the
new dentist why the patient was still experiencing pain and she said
the the
root canal work had...

Bailiffs by
Mr. Dataman
Following on from the thread regarding bailiffs, I would like to tell you
about a recent experience.
A company who are based in Rossendale, Lancs informed us that one of their
'men' would be calling on us at 3.00pm.
He rang about 1.30pm to ask if he could come early because he was having
problems at the call he was making a couple of miles away.
We agreed to this and 30 minutes later he pulled...

Garage sale by
the Omrud
Are there any regulations surrounding a "garage sale"? A couple of
our neighbours have just announced that they are planning to hold one
in a fortnight.
We live in a very quiet cul-de-sac which itself is off a minor lane.
We don't get many strangers as the road is not obvious from the main
estate road. Consequently, there has never been any trouble or
break-ins here in the last 15...

Online order - where do I stand? by
Grunff
Hi all,
I placed an order for a washing machine online on the 2nd May. I called
the company on the day to check that they had the item in stock, and
they said they did. I asked about delivery, and they said "2-3 working
days, but it can take up to 10".
So far, it hasn't been delivered, and they are unable to provide me with
a delivery date. It appears the machine is with a delivery company...

Speeding by
me@privacy.neat
I have received a fixed penalty of 60 quid and 3 points for allegedly
driving at 92 on a motorway in Scotland. I actually saw the van on a
motorway bridge in the distance (half a mile/mile away) and as I
thought I was doing 80 (set on cruise control) I decided to "ignore"
it.
I can obviously pay 60 quid and 3 points (currently having none) - or
I can go to court and plead not guilty - asking...

Renewing a lease on 2 bedroom flat. by
Liz
I bought a flat 20 years ago with a 94 year lease. The flat was
recently surveyed by a local estate agent and she told me that I must
renew the lease otherwise no first time buyer will be able to get a
mortgage on a flat with a 74 year lease. I would like to sell my flat
because the freeholder has gone into liquidation and the common parts
are in a state of total disrepair, e.g. damp, no...

Just came through a recent local council elections, towards the end of the
elections (day before polls) a very nasty and personal leaflet was
distributed by the other party.
I am not a sore loser, i take the loss (by 47 votes) on the chin, but the
tone of the leaflet, which was picked up by the press (the leaflet was
emailed to the press by the party before it was distributed, for maximum...
