Is this defemation? by Gaz
Just came through a recent local council elections, towards the end of the elections (day before polls) a very nasty and personal leaflet was distributed by the other party. I am not a sore loser, i take the loss (by 47 votes) on the chin, but the tone of the leaflet, which was picked up by the press (the leaflet was emailed to the press by the party before it was distributed, for maximum...

Hounded by the UK Tax Man. by Robert
I hope someone can help me out on this, I'm being hounded by the UK Tax Man even though I'm now resident in Cork, Ireland. It all stems from me selling my small farm in Lancashire 2 years ago when I was 66. I'd had enough of trying to make a living from it, and I thought I'd sell up and retire to Ireland. I found a nice little cottage just outside of Cork ,sold the farm for what I could get on...

Meter Readers by Paul Cummins
I just had a "meter reader" on the door. He asked to read the Gas meter, and I asked to see his ID. He produced some ID card with a British Gas logo on it. He showed it but wouldn't give it to me to check. Now, we're not a British Gas customer Never have been. Never will be. I also know that Transco is also nothing to do with "British Gas" aka Centrica Group as Transco is now a division of...

Thames water billing by anthonyberet
Thames Water are very aggressive in their bill collection policy. I don't recall receiving a bill for the current financial year, but that aside, I now have a reminder notice stating that even if I have paid the first half of my bill in the previous seven days, that the whole year's bill is now due, covering until 31/03/2007. This seems a bit daft as I could well be moving in the next year -...

Exchange and Completion - time gap by stephen@palframan.co.uk
We're in the process of buying and selling and my solicitor is dragging his feet on arranging a completion date. He tells me we need at least 2 weeks between exchange and completion where I thought it could be done on the same day. Is this right? Why does he think it will take so long?

Arrested, cautioned and then released (can the police demand a DNA sample days later) by Graeme
Imagine that you've been arrested for a trivial offence. The Police say that the offence is "non-recordable" (so they don't have to take a DNA sample) and that you decide to accept a caution. Thus you're released and you hope/expect that the whole dreadful experience has now ended. However, a few days later you get a most unwelcome phone call from the arresting officer. He now claims that a...

Parking restrictions on private road by Robin_C
I live in a block of 12 flats at the end of a private road. The road is unadopted and we as a residents association pay a share of the upkeep of the road. The freeholder has been granted permission to build 6 more flats. As there is already barely sufficient parking space for the residents of the current 12 flats within our boundaries, there is bound to be overflow parking outside the houses...

injunctions? by Rolfiebabe
Hi all, I wonder if anyone can shed any light on this. My boyfriend shares custody of his 14 year-old daughter. The mother, his ex, is mentally ill and I presume somebody is allowed to act on behalf of her in any proceedings. Due to frosty relations with the ex in-laws recently, his ex-wife's sister is threatening to take out an injunction on him to stop him from going on a brief week-long...

Probate, caveats etc........ by \DP\
Dear Legal Experts. My father passed away several months ago. A few months before he died, we prepared his will using tenminutewill.co.uk at my aunties house (his sister). During this meeting my dad wanted to leave me his £180K house and his current wife (wife no.3) all his belongings and money (about 10K). His house was already 100% owned before he met wife number 3 and is in his name...

Ivy being grown up a boundary wall by Adrian
Oh, god, not another boundary wall/neighbour question... One of the outside walls of our detached house is right on the boundary, and next to the neighbour's drive. It looks like they're starting to grow ivy up it. I don't like ivy. I don't like it for a very good reason - which is that there's several other bits of our place where it's been grown in the past, and has ripped render off...
