Penalties for offence of killing an adder by
gb
Hello
This is a bit rural and a bit academic. Sorry.
What methodology should be used for finding out the up to date maximum
penalty for a statutory offence ?
A worker shot an adder with a .22 rifle because it was hissing at him
and because he honestly believed adders bite sheep and cattle (????).
He will not do it again and had no idea they were a Schedule 5 protected
species.

employment law help by
Paul Mac
I have been employed by a company now for 4 months, and as yet have received
no contract of employment, and have only received 2 wage slips in that
period, ( I have been paid 4 times)
I decided that today, I had - had enough, and left, do I need to give any
notice, seeing as I have signed no contract?
Also I have been offered a new job - which is on the condition I get
references. Can the...

Death of 'sole trader' - can business survive? by
Spencer4
A business is being run by a "sole trader". He dies, leaving a
profitable, established company with a small workforce.
What happens to the company's business bank account? There are
obviously many direct debits and standing orders, monies coming in
through invoices etc. Is it the end for the company, while the wheels
of probate turn? Or is there a way to keep the finances fluid and the
company...

Endowment Claim Against a Solicitor's Company by
Graybags
I was mis-sold an endowment in March of 1991. My solicitor sold me the
policy (or it was sold through them). They tell me that I can make no claim
whatsoever because they were regulated financially by The Law Society, and
claims from before April 1991 cannot possibly be considered.
Is this genuinely the case, or can a case for compensation be made?

Drive Off Deterrent by
iarocu@hotmail.com
A petrol station has introduced a spike system to deflate the tyres of
cars which drive off before paying for petrol.

Could they be liable for a civil or criminal damage claim if
somebody forgets to pay and has their car damaged by this thing.?

Unable to Vote This Year by
Simon Dean
Great, there must be some recourse.
I'd like to vote in the local elections, but am now prevented.
After my accident at work, I am still pretty much incapacitated. I was
expecting to be mobile yesterday after my followup at the hospital. But
unfortunately, I had to have a new cast fitted.
So today, 27th April, received a polling card. Hmm. Can't get there in
person. Had a look at the...

Definition of 'Loading' by
Robin_C
Does anyone know what the definition of 'Loading' is? If I stop in a
Loading Bay outside a shop, pop into the shop to collect something and
then drive away (within the 20 minutes allowed) at what point is this
'Loading' (or not)?
Does it make any difference what I am collecting (or delivering)?
Do different authorities have different definitions? (This relates to a
charge from TfL)
I'd...

Sex Offenders Register by
semper.occultis@gmail.com
One of our clients was convicted of a sexual offence in 2004. The judge
sentenced him to a short custodial sentence and an extended license. He
also instructed him to sign on the sex offender's register for a period
of 7 years.
The police have informed my client that because of the total length of
his sentence, he is to sign on for the rest of his life.
This seems excessive for the offence - so...

Transporting a dead body. by
Alasdair
I heard on the BBC news this morning that a woman was fined for
"disturbing the peace of a dead person" when she drove her dead mother
300 miles to avoid the cost of hiring a hearse to do the job.
What are the rules about transporting a dead person in the UK?
Suppose someone from Inverness died while on holiday in Devon the cost
of hiring a hearse to take the body north would be quite...

The death of legal aid by
Alasdair
It seems that the present government in the UK is doing its level best
to get rid of legal aid. Civil Legal Aid has almost gone and now
they're talking of severely restricting Criminal Legal Aid to boot.
This will doubtless mean many more miscarriages of justice and
innocent people languishing in durance vile.
If, as it would seem, the government wants criminal defendants to
conduct their own...

Ongoing boundary issue - still wish to dispute by
Tx2
Less than 10 years ago (unfortunately, I cannot recall the exact dates)
my neighbour built a porch which encroached onto our land by approx 18".
After us trying to be 'neighbourly', and resolve it as nicely as
possible, we found ourselves on the receiving end of abusive neighbours,
and thus decided to take the matter to solicitors.
The encroachment was admitted in a letter via our neighbours...

Bikes on Northern Trains by
DDEckerslyke
Hi
For 3½ years my journey to work has been cycle to train station, put my bike
on the train, then cycle at the other end. Last month the train company,
Northern, apparently after there were problems with "gangs" of BMXers
attempting to board their trains, issued the following guidance to their
conductors:
"Following recent incidents, regarding the number of cycles attempting to
board our...

Stolen car. Strange insurance company behaviour? by
news
My daughter's M-reg Corsa was stolen on Good Friday. She contacted the
police, got a crime incident number, then phoned the AA, with whom she
is insured.
The AA noted the details, and said they would send my daughter a claim
form. Nothing happened for a few days, then another company (Groupama
Insurance, presumably the real insurer) sent her a letter, asking her to
send them:

Making threats by
D.M. Procida
How threatening does a threat need to be for it to be taken seriously by
the law/police/CPS? And does the form in which it's issued make any
difference?
For example, would a handwritten letter warning someone to leave the
neighbourhood or else be treated more seriously than a few drunken
shouts about smashing someone's face in?
How seriously do Internet-relayed (mail, Usenet, web forum, etc)...
