Funding a legal action by Alasdair
Despite the abolition of Maintence and Champerty as criminal offences in 1967, I understand that where a third party (A) puts up money to fund a legal action by B against C, A could be held liable in costs should B lose and B is unable to pay. Can someone please tell me whether this is correct and what is the legal basis for it?

Worrying letter from major pharmacy by a_n_onymous80@yahoo.co.uk
A friend got this letter from a major pharmacy. They're basically saying "Oops, we poisoned you, but the amount is small so you should be OK." Gee, thanks. Still rather gobsmacked and would appreciate any input/advice/comments/insights/etc. ------------------------------------------------ Dear qwerty,

Music copyright question by a_n_onymous80@yahoo.co.uk
A hypothetical person downloads music off a peer-to-peer network to "try" them out. Music which he does not like is promptly & religiously deleted from his drive without fail. Music which he likes is kept on his drive, while he buys an original off Ebay. Have any laws been broken here?

Privacy: where are the boundaries? by Wm...
A new block of flats was built at the rear of our block late last year. There were a number of issues raised (mainly by one of my neighbours who is worse affected than me) regarding blocking out light, overlooking, etc. One way or another the building got built and is there now. So here is the problem. Now that spring has sprung they have begun to use their balconies. Their balconies look...

Where can I complain about a lawyer? by Simon
Hi, A while back I needed some legal advice about emigrating to another country, (non EU). So I got hold of an Emigration lawyer who made it clear that in my case it would be fairly straight forward, (because my wife is a citizen of the country). Been married to a Citizen, my application was free, but he would charge me a fee to "help" with the application.

Accident At Work by Simon Dean
Erm, Im not interested in making a claim to be honest (unless I really have good grounds, but I don't think I do), but I am interested in SSP payments to see if my understanding is correct and whether anybody knows of any insurance companies exist to insure against loss of earnings through sickness. Basically, I was walking down the stairs at work. Stopped. Threw a ball. Stopped. Continued...

Are balloons litter? by Steve
The reason for asking this question is because a week or so ago, I noticed that our local Labour party were having some sort of photo-shoot thing in our town square. This was accompanied by the release of lots and lots of balloons. No big deal... except that these are the same people that have introduced a warden scheme where someone can be fined for dropping any scrap of litter. BTW, I...

Responsibility for damage to rented property following burglary.. by tomcrocker@hotpop.com
Our (rented) flat has been damaged by burglars, and it looks as if the landlord is trying to avoid claiming on his insurance and leaving us to cover the costs, can he do this?? Here's the full story... I'm moving out of this flat now, but basically the flat we were renting was subject to multiple burglaries.

Reinstate AGM and laying of accounts by stevenlsharp@googlemail.com
Hello, I am the director of a flat management company that I have been running for about a year now.I notice from Companies House, that upon incorporation, the original members filed elective resolutions dispensing with the need to lay accounts and hold an AGM. I'd like to get these two elective resolutions removed as I believe that other flat owners (who are members) would best be served by...

Imitation firearm by Jon Ribbens
What is the maximum sentence for possession of an imitation firearm? If a Magistrates Court bumps it up to the Crown Court is this a strong indication that they think that greater than a 6-month sentence is appropriate, or is it standard for this type of offence? Is it significant that if the firearm in question was real, not imitation, it would not be illegal to possess (due it being an...

ASSIMILATION (NOT) AFTER RESTRUCTURE by GB
Hi each I have not been `assimilated` to a new post following a restructure. I have a letter from the HR Manager stating that where at least 80% of old duties reflect into the new post then staff will be assimilated. I have written a letter of Appeal against the decision. In the first paragraph of my letter I state " I consider that *** Company is in Breach of Contract in not

Bank late fees 2x due to missing post by a_n_onymous80@yahoo.co.uk
Hi. I'm a customer of Virgin credit card and used it to pay for a minor sum when I forgot to top up my purse with cash. I've probably used this card a few times in the 3 odd years I'd had it. I never received my Feb 2006 & March 2006 statements in the post. As such, I was hit with the late fee of £25 twice. I did receive my April 2006 statement, and was shocked to see my balance had ballooned....

Mugged and threatened with kitchen knife. by King
Last night at my local station I was threatened with a kitchen knife (roughly 10 inches) and I had to hand over my bag, containing wallet cash keys etc and mobile phone. I have only just finished sorting everything out. I did not put up a fight because it was late, deserted and I was on the stairs leading to the car park. Luckily I had one key on me my alarmed car key. I had a narrow escape. My...

Police Powers to require driver to undertake breath test by Alan
Morning learned people. I should point out at the outset that this query (unlike many on this group) is raised purely as a matter of personal interest and I have no pressing need to know my rights etc! So before any starts jumping on me its purely academic interest (and no I am not a student with an assignment!) My perception is that the police now seem to require drivers to provide a...

computer warranties by Richard Smith
A few questions about warranties/guarantees. 1. Dell sell computers that have only a 90 day warranty. Is this legal? I have never seen any other product with less than 1 year. 2. A friend of mine bought two Apple laptops (1 year warranty) of the same model at the same time and both of them stopped working after about 19 months with similar symptoms. When he asked Apple to repair them,...
