Mortgages by john boyle
In message , Stephen writes Possibly not the best place to ask, point me at somewhere better if it exists! Is it legal to have more than one personal (not Buy To Let) mortgage? Yes, just so long as you dont lie on the application form. We would like to let our current property but would like to use more

Parish council meeting by Chris Street
A local village which I drive through on my daily commute is holding a parish council meeting regarding proposed speed humps on the road. Firstly even though I don't live within the parish can I attend this meeting? Secondly is it possible to obtain information from the police/council about the traffic levels and accident rates/speeding rates on said road at all? From what has been said it...

Time limit to make an official complaint and claim for a refund by Dagmar
Hi, I've just been referred to this group for advice and you might see more advice requests from me in the next few days as I decided to adopt a new "fight back" policy; I've been ripped off quite a few times in the past few years but never had the time, strength or energy to defend my position and takes matters further if not resolved easily enough... I know this is a lazy way to go but I'm...

It's not uncommon, for example in a divorce situation when one partner moves out of the family home, continues to pay the mortgage on it, and buys a new home to live in with another mortgage.

UK national to marry Russian national. by Alasdair Baxter
A friend of mine, a divorced male UK national is contemplating marrying a divorced female Russian national with a 12-year-old son from her first marriage. If the marriage goes ahead, can the wife come to live and work in the UK as of right? If the couple separate shortly after the good lady comes to live in the UK, what will be the wife's position. Finally, will her 12-year-old son be allowed...

Re Plea in Mitigation by Neil McDonald
Neil McDonald wrote: When after finding the defendant guilty of an offence the judge asks for any mitigating circumstances before passing sentence, he is then given the biggest pack of lies snip To knowingly lie during mitigation would be at minimum a serious contempt of court, and possibly perjury. If you know of a case where this has occurred, perhaps you should raise a complaint?

Notaries. by Yoshi
Unlike in many countries, we do not have a tradition of using notaries internally. However, for setting up bank accounts abroad, or travelling with minors to USA, notaries need to be used. My question is: are the notary details actually checked? What is stopping someone from buying a stamp in the name of a (ficticious) notary and stamping his/her documentation with such a stamp?

Residency for foreign national by Bob C
A slightly complicated situation, so I'll try to explain this as simply as possible... Canadian passport holder, married to a Brit while living in the EU, and they have a young daughter with (I presume) a UK passport. Now back in the UK for about a year and looking to separate, but Canadian has concerns about her residency rights. Is there a simple answer to what will happen to her status if...

Legal and moral dillema by Martin
I had a little bit of a run in with a spammer a few days ago when I complained about him to his ISP. Since then he has resorted to low-level harassment forwarding me emails like adverts from large electronic stores, that kind of thing. This morning he picked the wrong email and forwarded me part of his client list. In fact it's all the domains registered/hosted with him due to expire in 6 weeks...

Does UK Govt have general immunity re cost impact of legislation (aviation) by Peter Crosland
It has always been possible for aircraft registered in other countries to be based in the UK. The main reason, with the FAA registry, has been to take advantage of the FAA IR, and occassionally airframe/avionics certification reasons. The Dept for Transport has announced they wish to put an end to this. The economic cost to aircraft operators based here will be of the order of £...

Plea in mitigation by Neil McDonald
When after finding the defendant guilty of an offence the judge asks for any mitigating circumstances before passing sentence, he is then given the biggest pack of lies about how a fine or jail sentence will deprive the family of a breadwinner or losing a driving licence will cause hardship and possibly loss of employment when in reality the defendants circumstances are somewhat different - is an...

Land covenants by Fred Smith
I would be interested in pointers and insight into how to defend the terms defined in a covenant. The covenant in question was written in 1896 to prevent future owners of the land creating a road/access route to a central area of "locked" land. On the face of it this prevents developers from building on the "locked" section of land since that cannot build any access roads to support their plans...

ebookers rip-off by ClippertyClop
I just booked a flight to the USA through ebookers.com, who quoted me an all-in fare of =A3400. No problem there. After filling out all the form details and giving them my credit card particulars, finally an invoice was displayed on the screen but showing=20 an add-on credit card charge of 1.5%. No previous warning about this. At=20 this stage the transaction is complete, so the total credit...

I have been told that the company is intending to make me a my colleague redundant as they need to close this branch office to make savings due to the poor performance of the company (there are only the two of us in the office). The company is a computer systems supplier and I have worked for them for 11 years. We are being visited tomorrow by the director to make us redundant and he has stated...

Boat purchase through broker SOG? by Fred
A friend of mine paid a hefty sum for a boat from a boat broker. Two friends who are quite knowledgeable in such accompanied him to view this boat. One critical question was the boat used in fresh water and was there any frost damage associated with this etc. He was assured that this wasn't the case. There are 2 witnesses to this statement. Essentially after a short time - weeks, a weep has...

"A Quick House Sale" - too good to be true ? by Adrian Brentnall
Hi All We're waiting for our bungalow to sell - and want to move abroad. Given the slow state of the UK property market, I was looking at the various companies who offer to buy your house from you, bypassing the traditional estate agents & solicitors. However - being naturally cautious, I was wondering where the 'catch' is ?

Anonymity of Witness by Alasdair Baxter
A defendant proposes to call a life sentence rapist on licence as a witness in a criminal case in which he is involved. If the press report his name and address, he might very well suffer unwelcome attentions from his neighbours who know nothing of his past. These attentions might well be violent. Can the defendant apply to the court for an order that the lifer's name and address cannot be...
