Yet another Will question by GB
Have I understood you correctly? You want to give your son aged 20 ish what amounts to a life interest in the house. That interest might be worth 80%+ of the house value, and you think you are being fair between them? You are tying him to live in the same house for the rest of his life in order to get maximum value from your will? Are you sure you have thought through what is really...

Did the police help to kill Danielle Beccan, the murdered Nottingham 14-year-old by Alasdair Baxter
I was disgusted to read in this evening's Nottingham Evening Post that the police held up for no less than 45 minutes the ambulance which was coming to take the injured Danielle Beccan to hospital. Apparently this is "normal procedure" where an incident involves the use of a firearm. I can understand the police wanting to protect the ambulance crew but 45 minutes while the shot girl bled to...

Product - Fit for Use? by abloss@(remove)golder.com
Hello all I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me with a point on consumer law? I was told by someone a while ago that if a company needs to replace a failed product more than once within the warrenty period you have the right to purchase another similar product and expect the company for cover the cost, since their product was not up to the task. I ask as I have a dive computer that...

Finding out if bankrupt? by A.Lee
My girlfriend works in a small shop, which has been getting more and more empty over the last few weeks, and pay cheques have bounced - the boss doesnt seem to be interested, and basically, just opens up in the morning, goes out, then comes back at 5:30 to cash up and lock up. The shop is a franchise of a large uk company, and I know one of the regional managers of this company. He says the boss...

Another council tax story by a
A friend of mine has a second flat. He's been long term ill, bedridden and therefore not using it. The council tax was paid by direct debit. Recently the bank messed up and the direct debit failed. The council took him to court in his absence and, not surprisingly, won. We only found out about this when his sister visited the flat and opened the post. Surely it's not beyond the court service to...

Google archives of libelous posts. by David P. Johnson
Contact a Solicitor. You wolud need to get a Court Order requiring Google to release information as to the perpetrator, which they wouldn't do without a Court Order - DPA bull****. Once you have that, you can send some nice legal (threatening) letters. Or take the git to Court. When you know who it is. Best of luck!

Porn pictures from the internet by Simon
Hi, Some of you might have seen on the BBC some new proposals about making it illegal to have certain extreme porn material on your computers. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4195332.stm I understand the need for such laws, but I have always been unclear on how someone can successfully be prosecuted. I have 2 scenarios in mind,

Not wearing a seat belt. by Alasdair Baxter
I know someone who has never worn a seat belt since they were made legally compulsory. He has never once been charged with the offence, only once warned by pc plod who saw him drive off without fastening his belt. This would seem to imply that "not wearing a seat belt" is not a high priority for the police and I wonder what the penalty is if one is convicted of the offence. -- Alasdair.

two jobs ... tax law? by ComPCs
I am currently self-employed, but for a variety of reasons need to boost my income over the shorter term, and am considering taking on a 2nd full-time job, leaving my business to be run by a 'manager'. How do the taxation laws apply in this case? My income wouldn't be in the higher tax bracket, but would I pay a higher % than if I were just in full-time employment with no 2nd, although low,...

Self defence weapons by Bruno Panetta
Hi, I'm an Italian living in London. In Italy some small self defence weapons are completely legal, like pepper spray, or some kinds of stun guns. Would I commit a crime if I bought a small container of pepper spray in Italy and took it to the UK? If the answer is yes (as I suspect) is it worthwile to apply for a permit, or is it just a waste of time? Thanks Bruno

Prescription Medicines by Alasdair Baxter
My doctor has put me on medication which is supplied by way of a repeat prescription every couple of months or so. To get the repeat prescription, I have to request it in writing or fax or to or visit the surgery and give them 48 hours' notice and then go back to pick up the prescription document before taking it to the chemist and getting the meds. The surgery will not accept telephone...

Why is looting a capital offence? by Alasdair Baxter
Can someone tell me why shop looters in New Orleans are being shot dead for looting from shops which, according to news reports, is largely committed by the police themselves? It seems an unreasonably harsh penalty for the theft of water damaged goods. -- Alasdair.
