Booby-traps and rape by D.M. Procida
If you set a booby-trap for a burglar, and the burglar is injured or killed, then you can be prosecuted for the injuries (or death) sustained by the burglar. I understand that this even applies even if you put up warning signs: "Warning! This building is booby-trapped!" What if you booby-trap your own body, so that an unwanted intruder is injured? Suppose a product were available, as an...

Requirement by company to work abroad while under notice? by PacMan
Hi all, a hypothetical situation, if I may: I work for a multinational company, with headquarters in a European country, not the UK. Said company has recently acquired a large contract in the UK. However, this contract is going to require some additional development work, both from the company and a few other companies (also European,

Warranty on replaced item? by news
A couple of months ago I bought a zoom lens for my SLR camera. The lens had a 12-month warranty. Recently the lens developed a fault and I took it back to the store where I bought it (a well known national photographic chain). The manager agreed it was faulty, and replaced it immediately with a new one without question. However, he wouldn't change the date of the original warranty expiry, so the...

Guarantees on televisions. by Chris Bacon
I'm about to buy a television. It will cost about =A3300. Various retailers offer 2,3,4,5-year guarantees, at a price, in addition to the (manufacturers?) 1 year guarantee. I think that an item like a TV should certainly last more than a year - if I do not purchase the "extended guarantee", would I have any luck in complaining after (say) 18 months?

Employment - Contracts & Threats by Mr_K
Hi there, Recently a friend of mine was forcedinto resigning from his job because the company brought in a new "wonder person", who in turn wanted "Her People" to take over everything. The rest of the department got put into positions where their ability to work was impossible, and in turn they too resigned. My "friend" wa told that they would just keep at him until they sacked him, or he could...

Stockwell shooting - who is liable for the damage? by Ali Akbar
Now that it has finally been admitted by the Metropolitan Police that Jean Charles de Menezes (the victim of the shooting at Stockwell) was not connected with the recent terror investigation, who will pick up the bill for the damage done to the train carriage? The five bullets were shot into the victim's head at point blank range and made such a mess of his face as to make visual identification...

Drink Driving in a Golf Buggy by Billywhizz
A friend, no really a friend, has the following problem. At a party in London late one night he wanders out to the car park next door and finds a golf buggy which he drives drunkenly around the car park. In his wisdom he goes out the OUT of the car park and onto the highway, intending to go back in the IN, no more than 20 yards. As luck would have it the friendly local constabulary are passing...

Has manslaughter been downgraded? by Ali Akbar
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/4714731.stm I would have expected that manslaughter was more serious than preventing a burial but Dalton got two years for the killing and three years for storing her body in his freezer. And why did he store her in the freezer anyway? -- Have a little sheikh for me...

Shoot to kill suspects? by Ali Akbar
As it seems the tactics used by the SAS in Gibraltar have now been brought to London, just how seriously are policemen allowed to kill or injure someone suspected of an offence? According to eyewitnesses of the Stockwell shooting on Friday morning, the suspect tripped or fell to the floor of the train before the policemen fired five handgun rounds into him. Not surprisingly, the paramedics...

Questioned on leaving the country by the Omrud
We are just back from France where we have a second home. Things have changed at Dover since last year - the first booth we got to held a French immigration official. OK, no complaint about that - he looked at our passports and waved us on. But the next booth held an unidentified UK official. She asked me where we were going, what for, and what we had in the boot of our car. I can see the...

Curfew laws overturned by Cynic
Hooray! I've just heard that the high Court has overturned the draconian law that permitted police to removed any child under 16 from a curfew area even when the child was not suspected of any misbehaviour (let alone a criminal offence). It was quite obvious to me that such a law, absent a state of emergency or other *temporary* good reason must be contrary to the HRA. It took them long enough...

Building society confidentiality failure by Phil Stovell
A relative of mine requested a copy of her mortgage account details. She received this, but also included in the letter was somebody else's details. This contained all the account details, including payments and amounts outstanding. She phoned the BS and the droid immediately contacted a manager. They then said they'd phone back later. When the droid phoned back, she was given what sounds like a...

Wrong amount credited to bank account by Mick
Last week I paid a cheque into my account for 50 GBP (sent in by post), a few days later a credit appeared in my current account for 500 pounds. I rang the bank and asked them what the credit was for and they told me it was for a cheque that I had just sent them by post. I explained that I think an error had been made by them and the reply was to send a secure message (online banking) informing...

My wife and I are separating in the near future. We need to sell the family home because we can't maintain the current home and a new one. Following the sale of our home what options would be available to my wife in terms of housing for herself and our children. Non existent sale items enticement ? by Daytona
I was sent Field & Treks summer sale brochure and I saw a bargain item which I ordered on-line immediately. Since I was paying flat rate postage for that item, I ordered another 2 items at normal (non sale) price which I wouldn't otherwise have ordered as they where cheaper elsewhere (but would not be after 2 separate postage charges). Guess what ? The order has arrived sans sale bargain with a...

Stockwell station shooting CCTV footage. by Dr Zoidberg
wrote: As an aside to the discussion of this shooting under another thread. I find it strange that the CCTV footage has not appeared in the media. Why? It appeared very quickly after the bombings, I am sure it would have appeared very quickly if a police officer had been shot. CCTV is generally only made public when there is something they need...
