Charities question. by Nowt
If a company limited by guarantee starts fund raising does it have to register as a Charity (if the amount that should be raised is more than the point at which charities have to register with the Charities Commission which is 1K)? In other words, are there any legal obligations to ever register as a charity or is it something always done voluntarily? Thanks.

Abandoned vehicles on private land by Jim Lad
For some time now a car has been left in the car park of our restaurant. The police were informed after 48 hours and the inspected the vehicle after a further 72 hours. We have been informed that it is not reported as stolen. What rights, if any, do we have to dispose of the vehicle before it becomes an eyesore or a target for vandals with a consequential negative impact on our...

Obligation to provide accurate information by Random Observer
Hello, When are we obliged to provide accurate information about ourselves? For example, sometimes you sign up for various services and they ask you all sorts of personal questions like birth date, income, occupation, etc. I understand that some of the information is required for lost password retrieval purposes, etc. but surely if we decide that we're responsible enough to keep track of our...

Isle of Man currency by Mike
Gary wrote: What is the status of Isle of Man currency in England? Upon returning from a recent visit, IOM currency was refused as payment in two motorway services on the M6 heading north from Liverpool. The reason given was that it didn't have 'sterling' on it and so they wouldn't accept it. I can't find the word 'sterling' on either the IOM £10 note or the English £10 note. I...

Worried about sale of policy by Budgie
Decided to sell endowment in April. Offer from life company was £13400, best offer from another company was £13995. Checked other company - registered with FSA with no problems, so went with them. Assumed quick sale as paperwork flew back and forth, culminating in form to sign to transfer policy. Form will only come into force when policy is sold, at which time company will date it and send...

Informal Caution & US Visa by ng
I am currently applying for a student visa to the US and have an interview date set with the embassy etc, however one thing that I'm slightly concerned about is the fact that a few years ago I received an informal caution - i.e. a caution that was merely recorded in a police officer's pocket book. Will this be on record and will the record be accessible to the embassy staff? If so will it impact...

Re Unwanted gests by ken
Marshall you will not believe what happened when I went to court , I went up to the clerk to surrender to bail only to be told that they had no record of the case or me and to go away, I showed him the letter confirming my bail, he sent me down to the office and they couldn't find any record either, now where do I stand luckily I had a witness with me, but have you come across any thing like this...

Neighbour's Tree My Satellite Dish by Dee
My neighbour planted trees next to the fence between our properties (his fence). A year or so ago, they grew to the point where they were blocking my satellite dish signal. I mentioned this to him and the reaction was unhelpful. I got the dish moved and it is now at the highest point where it can be fixed to the house. The trees continue to grow and are now blocking the dish again. The installer...

Depriving someone of the use of a car by fwinters6676@hotmail.com
Scenario: Car parked in a commercial car park in central London. Only one exit lane, no way to pay at a machine. The only way to get the car out of the car park is to pay an attendant who then raises the barrier at the exit. Now what if the attendant isn't there, you therefore can't pay him and therefore can't get the car out of the car park? Let's say he has put up a sign saying "Back soon"...

Question - can I annex unclaimed land? by steve.chambers@gmail.com
There is a strip of land alongside a gate to my house with a number of thorny bushes growing in it. When I bought the place 6 years ago, the owner told me he thought the land was owned by the council and I could probably buy it for a few grand. I phoned the council a few years back and they said it was not owned by them but might be owned by a private company (Somer Housing Group) - they also...

A friend of mine handed in his notice and he's just had his payslip for his final week. He received £8.00 net which comprised of £400 net income and £392 deductions. The deductions are associated with tests and certificates he receive 6 months ago for the safe handling of hazardous materials. I havn't seen his contract of employment which of course is critical to his position. However I...

Minor traffic offence in Greece by Michael Hoffman
Simon wrote: If someone commits a minor traffic offence on a Greek island, and then travels home without paying the fine; what would the learned members of ulm consider to be the likely consequences or outcome of said heinous crime? council house bought - joint or common tenants ? by colin2000@talk21.com
3 people (A+B) get involved in buying a council house. A+B, the married couple for 20 years, had been secure public sector tenants of the Council (named on the rent books). C, the son was not named on the rent book at all, but bought the house as the guarantor, becaucse A+B did not have enough revenue. Thus C could never buy the house by himself because he did not quailfy(not named on the rent...
