Junk SnailMail - resurrected by Joe Soap
A few years ago, the problem of junk mail seemed to be solved - all we had to do was register with the Mail Preference Service, and speculative junk from outfits we had never heard of virtually ceased. Then, some bright spark in the Post Office realised that they were losing the profit on the postage costs of all this garbage, and dreamed up the concept of Unaddressed Mail. They now take money...

What if DIY repair costs much less than the insurance payout? by Random Observer
Hi. Recently, I got an insurance payout for damage to my flat of about =A33500. The payout was based on quotes supplied to the insurance company by their own assessors. The agreement with the insurance company was that they pay the VAT instalment of =A3600 after the repairs are complete. However, in the end I decided to do the repairs DIY. This cost me about =A3850 in material costs, tool hire...

How does this work, then? by bigbrian
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/west_midlands/4076428.stm At trial, the defendant is charged with murdering two police officers, by deliberately driving his car at them. He's convicted of the murder of one of them, and acquitted of the murder of the other, on the basis that he didn't know he was there (he could only see one officer in the car). He was convicted of the manslaughter of the...

How can you get rid of land you don't want? by Troy Steadman
The land in question is a rectangle in our garden surrounded by brickwork and with an attractive tree on it. Its paper owner (a Ltd Co) can neither access it nor see it. We (with lots of thanks to Richard Faulkner) are exploring ways of obtaining title to this land without damaging the value of the remainder of our property which we must sell shortly. Say for the sake of argunent the tree had a...

Police Dog by Darling Buds
I am in the process of training a puppy. On the site I use for equipment they sell stickers for your car with the words "WARNING POLICE DOG" and also "SERVICE DOG" on them. Obviously I don't need that sticker but just wondered what the law would be to use such a notice on the rear of your car. Just wondering honestly :)

Sony stopping legal trade by Beck
This is a complicated situation, I shall try and explain as well as I can. The Sony PSP (playstation portable) unit is out in the UK in September. Some people have been importing the consoles and games from USA, Canada and Japan. This is legal isn't it? Its not like people are pirating their software, its simply purchasing them from abroad before it reaches UK shores. Now what Sony are doing...

Street Sign by Debbie
Hi, I live on a small cul-de-sac where there are a number of children living. In the evenings, the kids tend to all play together in the road, from the smallest (3 yrs) to the oldest (14), and it's lovely. They don't damage property or make any amount of noise. The gardens are too small for groups of children to play, and the nearest park is too far for the little ones. There is one couple...

Data protection by Goromoff
I have a matter running at the moment, and would appreciate input. It may be a matter of Law, and yet it may be one of interpretation. I live in what was a council owned house, now transferred to an Arms Length Management Organisation. This operates from the same premises with the same personnel, only the name has changed to protect the guilty. legally, the entity is a Limited Company, jointly...

Allegations of gross misconduct by Colin Wilson
(not me, thank god !) I know someone who is being hauled in to a disciplinary hearing tomorrow - the circumstances are the guy in question ("a") has been with a company 14 year, and the MD brought in his useless prat of a kid ("b") 18 months ago who refuses to do any work. Its a relatively small company, but i`m not sure of the number of staff at the site (less than 30 I think). Its common...

Home Brewing beer and the law by bartender@beer.sna.cx
I'm trying to do a bit of research on the legal status of home brewing. None of my brewing books discuss the legal aspects of home brewing. Nowadays, it is legal to home brew beer in the UK, but are there restrictions on what one can brew (eg. gravity etc), in what quantity, and what one can do with it (eg. can you give it away for free, sell it). Has it always been legal to home brew beer ?

Neighbours & Boundaries by Tony Pottrell
Hi all, I have a neighbour who is a tenant of a local housing association. The property is at 90 degrees to mine and recently the small boundary fence was blown over. The tenant recently removed the fence entirely and since then their children have been taking shortcuts across my garden to get to their house. (No gate on my garden).

Hot offices, trains and the law by Random Observer
As I understand it, British law doesn't set a maximum temperature for working conditions. The WHO, on the other hand, recommends a maximum temperature of 24'C (See reference 1) According to reference 4, some offices are an absolute sauna, while the apparent temperature in a Tube due to the high humidity has been calculated to be 52'C (See reference 2). The article notes that: "=2E..any...

Mail order goods to minors by a
The thread on bar-staff serving to minors got me thinking. The appeal court recently ruled that sale of R18 videos by mail order was illegal because the supply of goods was at the point of delivery, not at the point of purchase. http://www.bailii.org/cgi-bin/markup.cgi?doc=/ew/cases/EWHC/Admin/2005/995.html Those supplying other age restricted goods like knives and glues don't need to be...

Neighbours rights to remove encroaching vegetation by Jim M
Hi, I'm wondering what our rights are as my family is in a bit of a situation. We live in a semi-detached property and our neighbours have recently taken to reaching over the fence and cutting back anything growing in our garden which they feel is encroaching into theirs. Are they legally entitled to do this, and does anyone know of any

Going bankrupt? What are the pro's and con's? by Lucretia
Hi, I've got myself into personal debt and I had to leave my job of 6 years cos it was doing me in (plus I was going to be sacked cos it showed). I haven't been able to pay bck the debts, I've had to move because I couldn't afford my flat, a friend help me out there. Now, if I go backrupt, I need to know what the pro's and con's are? Ultimately, I would like to set myself up in business at...

Inertia Selling by Goromoff
My No.1 son and his girl friend have landed in a spot of bother with inertia selling. They received Classical music CDs through the post, unsolicited. They simply ignored them and think now that they may have become lost, as neither of them listen to or enjoy classical of any kind. Being new to the big wide wonderful world of housekeeping, they have simply ignored them, but now the sending...
