Another Will question by David J
I can't seem to find anything on this topic, maybe because is isn't relevant.... My question is: Does a Will have to be hand-written by the Testator? Or can it be typed/word-processed. All the samples I have seen show the text in hand script. David

Redundant or not? by adamwatson@sogetthis.com
The company I work for is closing the office where I and my colleagues work and wants to move us all to an office 30 miles away (1 to 2 hours away, depending on traffic). Our contracts say,"Your normal place of work is XXX. You may be required to work elsewhere." I thought that means I may have to visit customers. HR say it means they can move the office and not pay any relocation...

Car insurance - car written off but low offer by Rob Nicholson
Some barstool attempted to steal my sister's old Punto on Christmas Eve and left it in an undriveable state having wrenched the door open and ripped out half the wiring. This of course completely messed up Christmas plans but I don't think the thieves had any concern for that... Anyway, not surprisingly, due to the age of the car, the insurance company have written it off. It's not been easy...

Fixed Penalty - incorrect details by James
Just got a fixed penalty for parking for 90 seconds on the zigzag bit of a pelican crossing, whilst I was loading a TV into my car. It was raining, my nice new telly was large, and there were no pedestrians anywhere to be seen, but as the nice officer reminded me, the law is the law. The officer seemed a bit inept in filling the form in, which in hindsight I should have capitalised on more...

Footways and Footpaths - what's the difference in law? by Tony Raven[_2_]
There seems to be a lot of confusion about footpaths and footways and I'm interested in what the difference is in law. The law cited against pavement cycling (Highway Act 1835 s32) uses the wording "footpath or causeway by the side of any road made or set apart for the use or accommodation of foot passengers" However the Fixed Penalty Offences Order 1999 s3(2)b says the FPD offence is "b)...

Subject access - revisited by Him & Her[_2_]
Hi all, Following on from my previous post WRT a subject access request to a hospital, what would likely happen in the following scenario. Hospital confirm in mid December that they are now gathering the requested information and once this is completed they will write to request payment. What happens if the patient dies before payment is requested and made. Can "the estate" just pay the

Civil court action for assault by snowman
I want to take CIVIL action for damages against an individual who assaulted me. I am not interested in going to the police or the CICA. Does anyone know of a solicitor who can assist me in mounting a county court action? I am 73 years old and have a heart problem. My assailant, who is is about 30 years old, knew that before he assaulted me. None of the local solicitors I have approached are...

use of traffic cones - what is the law / what is permitted by Martin g1gyc
Hi, I have done a number of web searches but can not find the information I am looking for. What is the law with respect to the use of traffic cones (on the pavement and in the road)? i.e. I have a neighbour that persists in putting a traffic cone on the pavement right at the curb between his property and ours (I guess he is doing this to prevent any one

mis-selling and lack of proof by rahulanand97@gmail.com
Hi, I write from India. Here, a category of insurance product known as ULIP ( unit-linked insurance product ) is mis-sold on a large scale. From my experience, I find that the financial advisor ( who is sometimes an employee of the insurance company ) provides incorrect information _vebally_ to the prospective customer during discussions.

Is this warranty legal? by Percy Picacity
A high street "catalogue" shop offers a "3 year extended warranty". This is operated by a separate insurance company. The retailer replaces goods which fail within one year of purchase. If the item fails after, say, one year and one day the retailer sells you a second identical item and pays himself from the insurance. This does apply up to three years from the original purchase. Your...

Permitted development rights protection and joining a conservation area by smithy42
I wish to build a brick built workshop in my back garden. I am allowed to do this without applying for planning permission provided it built within the rules of permitted development. However my council want to bring my property within a conservation area (this could happen within 7 weeks). This will mean that I will need planning permission for the workshop. How do I protect my right to build...

Tips for protecting our privacy by sk8terg1rl
Hi everyone, Can we share as many tips as possible for how we can protect our privacy under increasingly intrusive surveillance? Of course, only legal methods should be suggested. Here are some of mine. Please correct me if I have misunderstood the application of the law in them. 1) Using a PO Box. While AFAIK the PO must disclose who is behind a PO

Recording of conversation as evidence by endurium@googlemail.com
Can a recording of a conversation - telephone or otherwise - made without the other party's knowledge or consent be used as evidence in court? Is it legal to obtain evidence in such a way? I'm curious as I'm having a problem with someone who verbally agrees something and then just ignores what's been agreed, and getting written agreement is a hassle. Any advice much appreciated

Construction and Use Regulations and Type Approval by Doug Giles
An increasing number of vans (mainly white vans of course!) and commercial vehicles are being fitted with a modification which is extremely dangerous; and I suspect that this is not allowed under the Construction and Use Regulations and in respect of Type Approval for the vehicles concerned, since it contravenes the current construction principles for safety. I have seen at least one really nasty...

TV licenses: Argos collecting (wrong) data by Sam[_3_]
Hello, I have received a letter from TV Licensing addressed to an unknown person, stating that this person bought a TV from Argos for use at my address. Clearly someone has given Argos a made-up name and my address! I just wondered: 1. By law, does Argos have to collect this data? If so, which Act says

CPW changed T&Cs without telling me by BobC
In November 2006 my two sons and I bought mobile phones each, with a cash back deal from Carphone Warehouse. The cashback involved sending a claim form in every two months and they replied with a cheque. Always put all three claims in the one envelope and sent it Recorded Delivery. Some time later we each get a cheque in the post separately. All worked fine until the last claim. Did the same as...

Small claims for a missing part of delivery? by A.Lee
I've bought a widget from an ebay private seller. Total cost inc. post of less than £50. The package did not contain all of the items advertised, and the part missing was the main, costly, and heavy part of the package. It is clear, from the amount of postage paid, that the item was not in the box when it was sent. - If the item was included, the package weight would have been near to 5kg, it...

Rubbish letter from Camden Council by sk8terg1rl
Hi everyone, Recently this letter from Camden Council popped through the mailbox and from the generic wording, the rest of the houses in my area. It basically threatens action if rubbish is put out at the wrong time or it causes a mess, referring to Section 87 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Scanned document: http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/4928/rubbishletterxx9.png
