Sick elderly relative that wont accept help from anyone. by Bookworm
I have a relative, a second cousin, who is housebound, nearly blind and can hardly walk. She lives alone in a flat in West London. I live too far away to help her in physical terms. She needs help in cleaning, cooking, personal hygiene etc. She sounds in a bad way and is pestering my elderly Mother on the phone with her problems yet any suggestions are turned down. Her daughter buggered off to...

Mobile phone insurance by James
I'm trying to process a claim with a firm called 'supercover insurance', after i dropped my PDA last week and lost it. I purchased the phone off ebay 12 months ago and paid through paypal - it was £220. The insurance company are refusing to progress my claim without a copy of my receipt for the phone, which they are saying must have the IMEI number on it. My insurance certificate states that...

Leasehold Property Service Charge Arrears by stuart.d.hardy@gmail.com
Hi All, Hope someone can help me here, I purchased and moved into my flat approx 1 year ago, since then I received no invoices for my service charge. Around a month ago, I received a 3rd and final demand for payment, which was addressed to my previous address, but cover-noted to come through to my current one. I arranged with the managing agent to repay the amount over the next two months,...

Returning Faulty Item by elziko
I bought an item on the Internet that was faulty. The retailer who sold it to me gave me an RMA number and only then did I return the goods to the address he specified - I did this by Special Delivery. Can I now expect the retailer to refund me the cost of this postage? I assume there is a relevant part of the Sales of Goods Act but I can't find it. TIA

County Court Costs Order by POP3
Hello! In my recent civil court “adventure”, the county court Judge stated that “Petitioners costs assessed at £375 to be paid by the Respondent in any event”. Is it possible to clarify or confirm the precise meaning of the above costs order as I have been given contradictory advice on the matter. In particular, does the absence of a specific payment due date or payment period allow me to pay...

surety and transfering house ownership by r.bartlett
Hi guys. As it stands I'm currently being asked to stand for a 100k debt. I'm willing to do this but they want my house as surety. Naturally this is of concern so wonder if I can transfer ownership of my house to my wife 'just in case'? Any advice most welcome Cheers

Price Promise by sheila
I bought something off a web site, where they give a price promise. "If you find the same product offered at a lower price locally, let us know and we'll beat that price by a further 10% of the difference - even up to 14 days after your purchase. Receipt required as proof of purchase." They have now reduced the price of the product, within the 14 days, both on line and in store. I called to...

Wills: Leaving estate to someone who dies at the same time by PM
If Person A leaves their estate to Person M but includes a clause in the will that if Person M is dead, the estate goes to Person B; at what point does Person M have to be dead for the estate to pass to Person B?

Update on seized vehilce by Peter Crosland
Thanks for all the helpful comments. I still can't find the actual text of the rules that apply. The owner of the car attended the police station and after some three hours of fruitless negotiation ended up selling it to a relative who insured it and arranged collection. This raised some additional queries and the whole affair in the subject of a formal complaint. Amongst other things the...

Work Uniform or Protective Clothing? by Pizza Guy
Is having to pay a £50 deposit taken out of our wages for a new store uniform we will have to wear for a well known pizza delivery company legal? The health and safety executive poster we have displayed in the store says a company should provide free protective clothing for staff but *management* have decreed that the uniform we have to wear is not protective clothing and therefore that...

Wrong number plate on ticket by Les Desser
A friend (really) got a ticket for staying too long at a meter, but the number plate that was recorded was wrong - one of the letters had been duplicated. Does that invalidate the ticket or could they correct it after doing some detective work (the number plate as shown is clearly wrong and the most likely error is that of the duplicate letter)? Thanks --

Death liabilities in Turkey by Lol
Not sure if this is the right place to ask - but would be grateful for a pointer to the right place if not. A friend of mine has a Turkish wife. Her father has recently died in Turkey leaving considerable outstanding debts. The father has always lived in Turkey. He is trying to accertain who is responsible for the debts. As I understand it (delicate time to ask too many questions) there are...

Liable Email - Action advice needed! by Miss Lewis
Hello, I have recently been made aware of an E-mail sent from one person at my work place to another internal person containing information that can be classed as Liable. This information is very damaging towards me. Please can someone advice the best course of action to deal with this situation as I do not want this issue to slip through the net by not dealing with it correctly. I am in...

Prohibited place by a@b.invalid
I live near an RAF base. It's not high security, the locals, for example, walk their dogs on the fields. Recently I've been mapping the nearby footpaths for the openstreetmap project (www.openstreetmap.org) and I've found that lots of the footpaths start on public land with a "Public Footpath" sign and it's only when you get to the other end and turn round to look where you've been that you...

Can the law require you to lie? by Mark Goodge
Section 54 of the Regulatory and Investigative Powers Act (RIPA) includes provision for it to be an offence to disclose that you have been served a Section 49 notice (or to disclose that anyone else has, if you come into the posession of such knowledge). As it happens, I have never been served a Section 49 notice. If someone asks me if I have ever been served such a notice, I can truthfully...
