Data Protection Act "statutory maximum" fine by
Ian Chard
Hi,
The Data Protection Act 1988 s60(2)(a) refers to "a fine not exceeding
the statutory maximum". What is this, and where is it defined?
Thanks
- Ian

Out of guarantee laptop by
Freddie
A friend bought a Fujitsu laptop computer. 2 weeks after the 12 months
guarantee period, the hard drive went. The company are refusing to
repair/replace the hard drive. However, she did ring them about the
fault before the guarantee expiry date, so they were aware there was a
fault.
What can she expect from them?
TIA

Charge for Registering a New Owner with Ground Landlord by
Nick
I have recently moved to a new flat.
A month ago I received a notice for the ground rent for the coming
year - addressed to the previous tenant by name or the Current
Leaseholder.
I paid the amount promptly.
Yesterday I received a Final Notice - again addressed to the previous
tenant by name or the Current Leaseholder.

Web supplier not responding (bust/dead/just useless?) - options? by
Tim S
Hi,
Not a serious problem, but a not uncommon one I suspect... And partly my own
fault (let this be a warning):
I ordered a printer from an online supplier who claimed to have stock. It's
an item that everyone else was out of stock of (or I'd have used Dabs et-al
like I normally do) and I was in a hurry so I didn't check their background
as I usually do.

Done a runner - who can I tell? by
Tx2
Someone I know, who isn't what I would call a friend, owed a lot of
money (circa £11,00) to credit cards/loan company but has 'emigrated'
and now lives in Spain.
This person has done something else which I'll not go into here, which
invites them being taught a lesson!
Unfortunately, i do not know who the credit agencies are to whom she
owes money, but is there a single source whom I could...

Dismissal from course by
Dr George
My partner enrolled in a government-funded healthcare course a few
months ago. She is currently in a dispute with her tutors, as they've
said that she will have to take an additional course to qualify,
something that was definitely not explained to her when she first
started. She followed the internal complaint procedure (leading to
nowhere), but when she said she was not happy with the way...

Can an employer force you to buy a Windows computer to use at home? by
D.M. Procida
Tutors at the Open University are now obliged to use the eTMA
(electronic Tutor-Marked Assignment) system. This only supports MS
Windows.
What is the position of a tutor who has been using another operating
system, on her own computer, to do the work required for this job for
years? Who can be expected to foot the bill for purchasing a Windows
computer in this context?

Union in bed with employer? by
Alasdair
I have a friend who works for a high street bank. Every year the bank
increases the sales targets of its counter staff and expects them to
do more and more unpaid overtime. Yes, they are offered time off in
lieu but only at times convenient to the bank.
If sales targets are not met, this can lead to disciplinary action.
I asked my friend why the relevant union, UNISON, did not object to
this...

Please, is it possible to get details of long defunct limited
companies? I am interested for a research project in finding out the

Is this information available and how much does it cost?

Unfair Hearing - Human Rights by
Fat Freddy's Cat
Any thoughts on this -
An employer (local authority) has recently reviewed everyone's pay and
conditions...
A union ballot rejected the package...
The employer now states that the ballot wasn't about payscales, just other
T&C's...
They are pressing on implementing the pay scales and another ballot is
taking place on the other T&C's...
They have announced an appeal process for those whose pay...

disabled people who have difficulty standing in queues?
An elderly friend of mine is quite mobile but has a lot of pain if

went to Customer Services to try and pay for it but they would not

Reclaiming "bank charges" from Student Loans Company? by
ajmoss_throwaway_account_001@hotmail.co.uk
Someone I know developed a serious mental illness while at university,
and dropped out of the course in 1995. Unsurprisingly, he had borrowed
money from the Student Loans Company.
Under normal circumstances, his repayments would have been deferred
every year, but he was more or less totally incapaitated for several
years, to the extent that he could not cope with routine paperwork. As
a result,...
